    Default Rumor: Froyo on 7/30

    O.K.,

Don't shoot the messenger. I am just repeating what I heard and what I have read elsewhere. I am very skeptical of this information, but it gives me a glimmer of hope. As always, when I see it, I will believe it.

I happen to talk to a account services rep last night and happened to ask if they had heard about when the EVO 4G would get version 2.2. I was expecting her to tell me nothing, or I don't know, or even sometime in the Fall or Winter. She told me that she is hearing August 5th. I said, are you sure, and she repeated that is what she was told.

Now on to today. I was at a Sprint Corporate Store today buying some accessories, and was talking to the manager, and casually asked the same question about the EVO and 2.2(Froyo). First he said he hasn't heard anything. I told him I talked to an Account service rep last night and she said she heard August 5th. The manager said I can't say anything official, but it's possible. He wouldn't say anything else.

I got home and started to see if anywhere else on the web was reporting this date. I saw a thread over at Android forums, and this guy also was told August 5th.

    Here is the thread:

I even think I saw something at Engadget in a reply area saying the same thing.

AGAIN, I am not sure I believe this, but it is good to hope.

Please no flaming. All I am doing is reporting a rumor, and that is all it is. I wouldn't be surprised if August 5th came and went without the update, but we can always hope.

That would be great news, but it just seems a little too soon. It just seems to me that it would take a little longer for HTC to get everything with Sense working properly, and then for Sprint to approve it and get all their bloatware working properly.

I guess I'm not in the "I NEED IT NOW!" crowd. I am very happy with the Evo as it is with 2.1. I would much rather have it take a little longer to get the update than have them rush to get it out and have it full of bugs.

Well Sprint did say about 2 weeks ago that they are already working on the Evo port of Android 2.2 Froyo. It's very possible considering that both HTC and Sprint have managed to get a fix for the SD card out on the day of the evo release, then another update 3 weeks later to address the grounding issue, battery performance and web and phone performance. I have to say that Sprint is not letting the Evo down, look at how great the phone is selling. Hell they can't even keep in stock.

I agree. I'm happy with the EVO the way it is, too, and I would rather it be bug free, BUT, I'm a little jealous of the N1 having 2.2 on it now and seeing how it performs.

I know HTC said by Christmas, but I have to think that they have a certain order of development for the phones. EVO would have to be toward the top of the list of handsets to get the update working on first, right? Especially with Droid and Droid X already having pretty much set dates for getting it.

As they would say on Mythbusters........it's plausible!

One thing I don't understand: so many folks seem to expect Froyo to make available all of the things that Sprint has locked down for reasons of greed. What makes you folks think Sprint won't demand that Froyo be similarly crippled for installation onto the EVO? Why do you think Sprint would allow an O/S upgrade to eat into their profits?

I'm with you. I would rather wait and see a solid release than have an update that caused a lot of problems. The current OS is great with no bugs. It wouldn't bother me one bit to have to wait for another few months for Froyo. I fan say that this is the most delightful experience I have ever had with a smartphone.

Well I would bet the farm they disable wifi hotspot capabilities, not sure what else they would need to though.

I heard by the end of July once, so August 5th would not be too far off.

Well the 30 caps has to probably do more with HTC if that's the limitation your talking about. Again that's why Sprint is personally preparing the Froyo 2.2. And if anybody is talking about the WiFi hotspot, well if you like it, pay for it.

Hmm.. I can't wait that long. If the camera gets fixed on the Froyo Sense Rom, I'll have to jump to that.

Don't believe it for ONE second. I heard many of these rumors back when I had my Hero in regards to the 2.1 update and it never happened... Well it did, but what 7 months later?? I hate to be so cynical about this but I wouldn't believe ANY of these rumors. TRUST ME you're only gonna be in for disappointment

It's no cynical. The process is Google releases to HTC, HTC tests with their equipment and then releases to Sprint. Sprint then tests and if everything works to plan then releases to the customer.

Aug. 5th could very well be a date that HTC releases to Sprint, but Sprint approves to release to customers is another story.

I'm sure Sprint right now is swamped with new phone releases and is forced to delay the release of updates. Look at the Palm Pre. HP Palm released latest update to Sprint nearly 3 wks ago, but Sprint is still has it stuck in the testing phase.

for those of you who didn't own a hero, take it from someone who did: ignore the rumors. if you want froyo so bad you can't wait just root. otherwise just don't even think about it. if you pay attention to these rumors you will be let down time and time again. trust me.

I'm optimistic it'll come in August. the HTC Hero fiasco was in the past before learning from mistakes etc., so I don't think the speculative date is that outrageous

This is something to look forward to, software upgrades are exciting. It's like getting a new phone all over again.

in the past? the htc hero isn't even a year old. the worst of the whole thing happened towards the very end when every few days there was a new rumored date....the date would come and go without a word from sprint. THIS JUST HAPPENED. the hero barely got the update to 2.1 towards the end of may.

why i don't think it will be out in august: droid doesn't even have it yet and droid runs a vanilla android. droid received the update to 2.1 in early march. and htc hero with sense came a whole 2 and a half months later after several devices had already received the update. even the eris on verizon beat the hero.

A major update like this one, would that just be self downloaded and the phone updating itself???

Or would this take on the likes of flashing a ROM were you would have to get your puter involved and such??
