Default EVO voice search not working?

    Hello Everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster...blah, blah, blah.

I have attempted to use the voice search feature as per the recent tip on the Home Page, and find that on my EVO, it only brings up a typical Google list of internet-type results. Even if I say "dial-Elvis (or whomever is in my contacts)", or "open-maps", I just get a list of interweb-based results with no actual 'local' type search of my device. Is there a setting, or am I just not doing something correctly?

Maybe the much anticipated and hopefully beloved Froyo will answer this for me? After the last update, I will let some of you brave-types run the new 2.2 update for a little while.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Randy / Painthouse

Mine does exactly the same thing. VLingo doesn't work right either (same issue). I'm hoping Froyo will fix it.

I had the same problem. You have to download the "new" Google Voice software in the Market. Once you download and install, it'll work like a gem. I tried it a few times and it's working out great.

Once you do install, don't forget that you can long press the "search" button to bring up the voice command box.

Yea the new download works much better. Still gotta have the context correct, but works better then the orig.
Just wish there was a nice widget for it rather then just the app shortcut to create

Long press the eyeglass search button on the phone and it brings up the voice search.

Has ANYONE gotten the text message voice search to work?

I say "Send Text to Robbie... Hey Man, Whats up?"

Text box opens and in the message "message Robbie, hey man whats up?"

WTF this isnt even close to the video. Google is doing a LAUNCH on this junk? I must be doing something wrong.

Thats pretty much my experience. I tried downloading Vlingo now that its free and found far more success with it.

actually from what you wrote. that's exactly right without the comma in the middle. if you wanted a comma you have to say comma. If you'll hit send it will ask if you want to do it via Google voice or Messages (if you have a voice acct.).

What's the problem exactly, be a bit more specific.

Right painthouse. Mine is updated to the point where it is more like MrHankey's experience. No matter what I say it wants to call Belmont University. No matter who I ask it to text it doesn't seem to know I have people in a people folder.
I didn't use the plain voice search much but it was always very accurate. This just isn't. And while I am complaining....ALL the stories and blogs could have done a much better job of explaining we should look for the latest voice search and not something called voice action...wasted a bunch of time ...

I posted over the in android applications thread, I haven't been having any problems.

Tried Send text to uber yo dude
Send text to mom testing something
send text to Betsy trying this out.

They all came out fine. Even picked up Betsy with out saying the lastname. Hell it even recognized the word castlevania. Everynow and then a word comes out wrong, but it always gets the right person and puts the message in the message box.

Composing a text does not work for me either. I have all my contacts saved as phone contacts not google contacts...I'm sure this has something to do with it.

This is my experience with GV as well. After trying various different contacts and failing, I said, "call Dan Rodrgiuez cell" and got it to dial Dan Rodriguez. Except I noticed that it was a random Dan Rodriguez in Brooklyn. Which means that, even though it understood me, it by-passed my contacts and googled for the name and then called it without prompting me.

    Total Fail.

Vlingo, OTOH, is amazingly well implemented, and recognized names that my WinMo phone had problems with. Unfortunately, Vlingo dials without voice confirmation. This is no good if I want to dial without looking at the phone. Still, it does everything GV does expect more accurately and faster. If you don't have a fast internet connection, GV crawls and crawls.

    Default Problem fixed

I have had no luck with the prior version of voice search or the new one when used for voice dialing. Now I know why.

All of my contacts were being synced from my Exchange account. When I imported them into Gmail, now the voice search works perfectly.

I guess the program only works with Google contacts. At least those are my empirical findings.

    Cheers,

    Brent

Interesting... my contacts are also Exchange contacts. That makes sense why it refused to dial anyone from my contact list. What doesn't make sense is that the Voice dialer app from 2.1 did dial from my contacts, it just did a crap job of figuring out what I was saying. Why would they break functionality that so many users need?

Okay, so that's just another reason to install Vlingo.

Does this happen to anyone else with the new Voice Actions installed???

I hold the search button, say "Call Jim Smith". It calls Jim smith just fine... We talk... I hang up the phone and then a screen pops up saying "Did you Mean..." with several variations of "call jim smith" - AFTER i've already completed the phone call.... Happens every time I use the "call" command and it's annoying because you can't just hang up a call and get back to the home screen, you have to hit the back button to clear the pop-up.

Is this the same for you folks??

the biggest problem i'm having is it won't do the quick alarm set. It tells me that I need an updated version of Google Clock then takes me to a website but there is nothing to download there.

In the Google help it says the alarm function is broken and there is no clock download that will fix it yet.but one is forthcoming.

It happens to me with virtually all the search functions. Annoying and hollering for a fix.

No workarounds needed with Vlingo. Just sayin'.
