Evo Froyo, SD card disappears when USB plugged in
updated to Froyo on my Evo today. All worked fine until I plugged it in while listing to podcasts. At that time access to the SD Card went away. Using Astro I verified that when power is plugged in (using stalk USB cable that came with the phone and the 120V-to-USB adapter) the SD card disappears. Unplug the USB cable from the phone, and SD Card reappears. Is anyone else having this issue? Haven't seen this reported anywhere yet.
Thanks,

the SD card always disappears when you connect to a computer in mass storage mode. you can just plug it in but NOT click mass storage, to just charge the phone or whatever. but the phone cannot see the SD card when you go into mass storage to copy stuff from your computer. this is normal for all phones/devices.

I read somewhere that Froyo seems to interpret some chargers as being a USB connection to a computer, and (assuming you've got that option set) mounts the SD card for external access, which as others have pointed out, renders it unavailable to your phone until it's unmounted.
I have the vague memory that your phone figures out the difference between a charger and connection to a USB port based on either the total amps it's able to draw, or the voltage between two of the USB conductors. Presumably Froyo is a little less forgiving than Eclair in making that call, so that some chargers now end up looking like a computer to your phone.
The workaround is to change the USB option to "charge only". - 08-05-2010, 07:05 PM #7
Actually, when I plug my Evo into my laptop I can't use anything on the phone that needs to access the SD card...but I am NOT connecting in storage mode.
I consider it to be mostly a nuisance, but it does seem strange. I select "charge only" every time, but cannot access gallery, games that use the SD card, etc. Froyo didn't have anything to do with this for me, though, I'm pretty sure. It was happening before the update. - 08-05-2010, 07:29 PM

update to my problem: I incorrectly stated that I was using the supplied 120V-to-USB adapter to connect my phone. I was actually using a USB power outlet built into my surge protector. So yes, with Froyo it is now interpreting that as a PC connection. When I plug in using the Evo-supplied USB power adapter I do not have the problem. However, I have the options set to "prompt for connection type" and the default set to "charge only", yet when I connect to the non-Evo USB power supply it does not prompt me and my SD card disappears. When I connect to my PC it does prompt me, I select "charge only" and my SD card still disappears (much like the behavior AaronTV reported in his reply).
Prior to Froyo I was able to charge using my non-Evo USB power supply without losing SD card access. Now to keep SD Card access my only option is to use the Evo-supplied USB power adapter.

Doubletwist is the problem
Was having the same issue couldn't believe there were no options that would allow me to use the SD card and charge. Doubletwist option is the solution.
