Is it REALLY 4G Fast?

I have never really used 4G although Seattle has had it since day one in spotty areas. It was just a pain to try to catch it. I also live between Seattle and LA, so since they just turned on the LA market and its strong where I am, I decided to start using it. Besides the common lags/slowdowns on my EVO and the absolute, undeniably horrible battery consumption, my concern is, am I really getting 4G speed. I mean what is the marker for this speed? I know it’s supposed to be 4th Generation speed, but what EXACTLY is that speed. How much faster than 3G must it be to be considered 4G? Then I ran across this article that explained alot but left me with more questions. Or should I just give up and go along with whatever these cell companies tell us and move on with my life.

First of i have no slow down on my evo and battery life is great ok i am rooted but the lag i never had. You should restart your phone at least once a day to clear it out. Also 3G speeds are around 1000 to 2000 kbs 4G is between 6000 10000 kbs so i got the best on 4G where 10178 kbs very fast.

the 4G network is supposedly up to 10x faster than the 3G. Speeds can peak upwards of 10Mbps but average is 3-6Mbps. Uploads supposedly is up to 3.1 but i think Sprint still limits that to 1Mbps

Best I've had was 12978kbs

Pushing 13000kbs I'd say its pretty damm fast

And I also have never had LAG issues or battery problems

I've also been Root Since Day 1

All I can say is that I live in an area where I get both 3g and 4g, depending on where i'm standing at the time.....cant tell you what the speeds are but I can tell a marked difference in speed when I'm on 4g compared to 3g....broswer works faster and on 4g I can be on the phone, browse, and text without any lag to really speak of

i get the occasional lag using 4g but its not as bad as it used to be. Pandora is great with 4g, no skips in songs like with 3g even though i would have full bars with 3g as well. web surfing is so much nicer with 4g for me

Maybe my single biggest setback is that I am running stock with the default browser and should think about rooting. I have had my EVO since 8am day 1 and I haven't felt I needed to root. It may be time to go to the next ANDROID level .. Jerzyiroc here I come.

Same here. My phone breezes by even with 4G on. And as long as I'm connected to 4G and not seraching for 4G coverage, my battery life isn't that much worse than with it off. It's when it's searching for 4G coverage that the battery life is horrible. In Jersey City (which is 1 mile from NYC) I can easily get 10mb/s and quite often hit 11-12. I think the debate of whether it's technically 4G or not really isn't important. What is important is you can get speeds of up to 12mb/s with "4G". I can care less what they call it to be honest. I use the speed, not the name..

btw.. have you tried using a different browser? So far I'm liking Miren. Seems to be fast and really smooth.

Dolphin was interesting but it was sorta like a Needy Girlfriend

I couldnt do krap without it giving me some kinda warning or prompt me for something

Verizon basically says, 4G is that which is faster than 3G. ITU can call it whatever they want, in short, it's 4G for verizon (and tmobile, sprint, and what have you).

IMO - in the real world - on average - 4G is faster than 3G but not quite as fast as WIFI. i rarely if ever use it because it is such a big battery drain. i like it when i'm away from my WIFI network and i need simultaneous voice + data. to me - that's a more useful feature of 4G than the speed itself.

Personally I can care less what they call it. The bottom line is it's much faster than 4G. My battery drain isn't that bad when using 4G. It's not great but it's not terrible like people make it out to be... Some people are just never satisfied.

My 4G experience is bad at best. I am in Dallas TX a major Clear market and can hardly connect to use it.

I agree, they could call it 3G 2.0 for all I care... my 4g d/l speeds are better than my sh#tty comcast d/l speeds... if sprint lifted the 1mb cap, my u/l's would probably be better also...

Not trying to sound like a ******, but just because it doesn't work good for you doesn't mean it's useless for everyone else. 4G for me is perfectly fine. 4G is a brand new service. It's not gonna be perfect overnight.
