Question about upgrading rooted EVO to Gingerbread (when the time comes)

So I've heard some horror stories of how people turned their phones into bricks after upgrading their rooted 2.1 to unrooted 2.2 OTA. I really love having my phone rooted, as it allows me to put apps that the developers should have allowed moving to the SD card in the first place, but for some reason don't. So I just want to be careful when the Gingerbread update comes to the EVO. I'm guessing the OTA update will brick my phone or cause something bad to happen to my apps on the SD card, so I'm wondering if I need to wait for something special. Would this mean waiting on the rooted ROM from XDA? And if so, is that a simple upgrade, or will that mean flashing a new ROM and thus installing all my apps from scratch?

Always wait for the rooted ROM. Quick checklist for updating -

1. Do a Nandroid backup before you do anything
2. Titanium backup or if you don't mind one at a time Appbrain
3. Flash new ROM
4. Restore apps/data

OR you can do it the really easy way and run Cyanogen. Just flash over the top of the last ROM and you're done. Probably get the update faster too.
