Does handcent typically eat lot of battery?

I would say no. I also don't think it would be as popular if it did.

I've been using Handcent since day one and I have not noticed any battery drain due to the app!

I havent noticed it using large amounts of battery, Ive had my evo since launch day and installed Handcent a week later

No issues here either. Used handcent for a while after I got my evo on launch day, then deleted it in an effort to save battery life along with most of my apps on my phone. Then a few months ago my battery started lasting all day. Downloaded a bunch of apps again, including handcent and i've had zero issues with the battery. Happy camper. Not to hijack the thread, but is there still no icon that can replace the handcent icon? Not counting the notification icon.
