Windows 8 can't recognize phone in bootloader mode

I'm trying to root my Shift and am following the instructions on htcdev to get the phone into bootloader mode. When I am in bootloader mode, my Windows 8 laptop says it can't recognize the device. I've tried everything I know to get it to work! It recognizes it without any problem when I'm not in bootloader mode. I've downloaded drivers that were specific to adb/fastboot (found on another forum) and I still can't get it recognized.

Any advice?

Windows 8 was problematic for me as well. I got fed up with it and installed ubuntu on my laptop. Maybe you should download the live cd or make a boot stick and use that to root your phone.

I went to a family member's house and used XP. I started having the same problem and found a work-around by using PdaNet. Installed it on the CPU I was using and it automatically installed the app on my phone. Once they were both installed, it was able to recognize the phone in bootloader mode. Rooted phone now!
