Used up battery

My battery is completely drained because when I plug it into the charger the orange light flashes when it should just stay on. My problem is that my shift will not continue to charge after this. I will plug my phone in, leave the room for a bit, and when i get back there is no light at all.

I have no idea what to do, I have no access to my phone. Is a new battery my only solution?
