Hey guys,

I've had my Evo Shift 4g for a couple of days now and one of my biggest complaints about the phone is that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to sort my SMS messages by date. Every phone that I've ever had will display the messages with the newest on top. I have no idea how the HTC Evo Shift sorts it's messages but it seems rather random. Sometimes when I receive a new message it's near the bottom or the middle of the list.

I've searched through not over these forums but also other forums. I've googled it but no one seems to be complaining about this so there has to be a setting somewhere. I've also called HTC customer support and to my surprise, the person I spoke to said that there is no way to sort it by date.

I've also installed Handcent but it seems to sort the way the HTC messaging application sorts as well. Is anyone else having this issue? Did I overlook a very simple settings? I went through all the settings one by one......I know I'm going to lose sleep over this lol....

Thanks in advanced.

If you go to all messages do you see the date over to the right? That is the date and time that my messages are sorted by what are you seeing? Messages are sorted by conversations like all the text messages for one person is in one thread then the separate threads are sorted by date of the last message in that thread.

Does that make sense

Thanks for the reply Dave, yes I see that my messages are also grouped by people as well but when a new message comes in, shouldn't it move that message (along with the group of messages) from that person to the top of the list?

I just ran a test and this is what is displayed:

person 1 11:36pm
person 2 11:22pm
person 3 11:16pm
person 4 11:12pm
person 5 7:52pm <-- this is the one I just sent, it should be on top?
person 6 12:59pm
person 7 11:55am

so for the most part, it does seem to be sorted by time/date but when a new message comes it, it doesn't bump it to the top. When a new messages come in, it takes a few moments to figure out where that message is, very frustrating.

I know that I can always check the notification area on top, but there has to be a way to set the messaging program to always place new messages on top.

Ok today I was texting and the messages that show above shifting around while I was typing. Then I sent the message but it didn't show up as the bottom one so I thought it didn't go thru so I sent another one. Then I realized they showed up like 3 messages up I had to scroll to see them.....its weird

So your messages are being sorted randomly too? I browsed around the internet a bit more today but was still unable to find anything. I shot off an email to HTC to see if they tell me the same thing their phone support people told me. My last resort will be to actually drive all the way down to the Sprint store to see if their guys can figure this out. I swear I lost a quite a few hairs over this lol.....

Do you know what kind of phone the person(s) is using? I've noticed this same issue with only a few of my friends on my Evo. All the affected conversations are coming from Samsung Android phones. 2 people with moments, one transform, and one Epic. I think it has to do with the way the Samsung timestamps the sms when it goes out. I believe their clocks may be a bit faster than the ones on the EVO and Shift. This doesn't affect every text, but if your texting frequently with the other person, its more noticeable.

I kinda notice the same thing on mine but with mine I notice that the sorting is along with each msg from when its sent. Exp. I may say something @ 11:11 and a friend say something at 11:11 but his will show up before mine or vise versa.. the timing of sorting is off. Really weird.

Just a thought: are you saying you SENT a message and that thread didn't get moved to the top? On my EVO (similar software) it won't put a thread at the top when I send a message to that person, it will only put them on top when I RECEIVE a message from them. Is yours the same? I prefer it that way.

Download Handcent SMS from the Android Market and play around with it's almost infinite amount of settings. You'll surely find a solution there.

Some of the out of order texts may be due to network delays, in which case they will display at the time they arrived, not the time they were sent from the other person's phone.
