Why is "Cell Standby" eating my battery on the Flyer?

When I clicked to see what percentage of what was using up the battery on my Flyer I was surprised to see that "cell standby" was using around 22%. What I don't understand is why is "cell standby" using ANY battery on a wifi only tablet?! I have since turned on "airplane mode" and this keeps the standby from using any battery. But again, why is it using any battery at all?

Since the Flyer is using a phone version of Android and HTC didn't bother to take out the cell features is the general answer, but specifically I don't know. I can tell you that my Flyer doesn't have the same issue. In fact I haven't seen Cell Standby on the list of things using battery at all. Have you tried a reboot? That and then watch if shows up after you use a certain app, would be a way to track down what's calling it I'd think.

I had the same issue. I am testing a solution now that i saw on the xda developer forum. You have to access a special menu to turn off the cell radio. Go to calculator in landscape mode. Type in the following: !+!+4636+!+! Then hit the equals sign. You will see a menu which has "tablet information" as one of the entries. Select that entry and then select entry that turns off the cell radio. I think you may have to do this sequence every time you turn off the HTC--i wasn't really paying attention at first. I did see, however, a reduction in battery use for the cell radio category after a few hours although the cell radio was still listed.

I just had this problem for the first time this morning. I watched the battery go down about 20% in the space of a half hour. When I checked Battery Usage, it said 67% was going to "Cell Standby".

I never had this problem before the November 14 software update. I have a Best Buy Wifi-only Flyer.

I just tried the !+!+4636+!+! hidden menu trick. The radio was "ON", I turned it off. Hopefully this problem will go away.

If you are rooted you can just delete phone.apk and telephonyprovider.apk

Interesting. I just had the cell standby issue for the first time. Shut off the radio with the calculator hack.
I opened a support ticket with HTC. We'll see how it goes.

Just got off the phone with HTC's escalation team. Rather than having an answer, the guy asked me a couple questions about when this happens, what causes it, etc. He told me I should hear back from them within a couple business days. Mentioned they might need to write a patch to fix it. All in all, a good professional call, and I hope they call back with a resolution soon. When I opened the original ticket, I added a link to this thread, so I'd guess they'll know this isn't an isolated incident.
I asked about Gingerbread, and got the stock "committed, but no date" answer.

So, Just got off the phone with the escalations team again, and here's what I found out. The guy I talked with said that there is another maintenance release that should resolve the cell standby issues. He said it would probably be released early January. He also said that he didn't expect to see the Honeycomb update for the wifi only Flyer till January as well.
We'll see I suppose, but it sounds positive to me.

For what it's worth, I haven't seen cell standby in the battery list since the Honeycomb upgrade.
