Holy crap I'm lost - I just want 2.2
First of all, I'm coming from a Palm Pre. I had it hacked, patched, overclocked, etc - so I'm not dumb, I just have no idea what the terms here mean. Odex? Deodex? Nandroid? adb? Cyanogen vs. others... ?
I have a Sprint Hero and I have a pretty good idea where to start: I need to root. That's fine - I'll root the thing. Then I need to find the ROM that I want to use and get it onto the phone, right?
Basically, I have heard from every angle that 2.2 is faster than 2.1. And Sprint doesn't wanna give us 2.2 officially - so that's why I'm here. I don't care about Sense UI, I don't care about the Sprint apps, I don't care about custom features and blahblahblah radios. I want a phone that is faster and works stock like it probably should have from day 1 (I bought a used one and restored it, however).
There just seems to be endless options - but has anybody made a fully functional 2.2 ROM for the Sprint Hero yet? Who and where can I get it with directions? - 07-02-2010, 02:54 PM #2
adb-need andoird-sdk set up on pc.
nadroid-is a file made by your phone that backsup how your phone is now.
odex-deodex-when they first release a official rom they have odex files. We dev after sometime convert those odex files and put them in the apk.Read in the HoneyBun thread first post explains better.
As for 2.2 it has not been released to the masses. Its not completely ready(no camera). At xda they have roms without sense. - 07-02-2010, 03:13 PM

Do you mean at xda they have working 2.2 roms for the HTC Hero without Sense UI? ...With the camera and everything else working?

Thanx for chiming in also, Beezy - I've read a lot about your work here!
How about a 2.1 ROM that does what I'm looking for? I understand that not only having 2.2 would speed things up, but also removing Sense UI - which is now not easily accomplished as Sprint has locked you into using the Sense home launcher... I can wait a little while for 2.2 if I can get 2.1 working faster without Sense.
I really bought the phone as my entry into the Android realm - While it may be a bit too big for my taste, I'm a huge fan of the EVO -- but I'm not a huge fan of the $10 premium on my monthly bill. I didn't want to jump in headfirst without testing the waters first, you know? And I'm absolutely loving Android. It's nowhere near as easy as WebOS is, but the capabilities here are huge and the community is still behind Android. - 07-02-2010, 03:58 PM #7

What about your IcedHoneybun v2 or whatever? I can't seem to find where to download it at all... The Darchdroid link you recommend seems a little minimalistic and I don't want to have any Google stuff missing - I have no idea yet how to "flash" them onto the phone...

I run IcedHoneyBun-v.3.6 here's the link there are several to choose from.I would go with any version that is Iced.I made it so you can delete a lot of the stock sprint apps with a file manager.I give details on how to delete them on first post.

lol I thought that link was only about v1!! Ok - I'll look through all eleventy billion pages there... What's the different between Iced and non-Iced?
Edit: The links are all right there on the first page. Nice. And I'm a moron...Last edited by etnpnys; 07-02-2010 at 04:38 PM. Reason: Edit: The links are all right there on the first page. Nice. And I'm a moron...

Ok I just read through a lot of it - what an amazing job dude. Usually devs don't like documentation (or they really suck at it) but you've done a great job.
Now, I haven't even rooted my phone yet (I'm doing it as we speak). What does "wipe" mean and will I have to do it? - 07-02-2010, 05:56 PM #13

Ok - I'm rooted. The nandroid backup didn't work cuz I don't have any free space on my SD card - I'll do it later.
What does IcedHoneybun accomplish for me? Just the ability to remove the Sprint stuff or is it any faster as well? Can I turn off the Sense UI also?
And how do I wipe? (Sounds ridiculous asking that...) - 07-02-2010, 06:36 PM #15
I can vouch for DarchDroid 2.7.
I thought I would miss Sense but I don't, not at all.
If you run benchmarks like Linpack & Quadrant you'll see how fast and efficient AOSP is.
2.2 will supposedly be twice as fast.
It looks like DarchStar is getting close to having it done, right now the only thing not working is the camera and that is a kernel issue. - 07-02-2010, 06:41 PM #16
To wipe power off the phone, Hold down the home button and turn the power back on, you'll end up in a green/black screen with a few options there.

Read through there, Its explains it a bit better than I can, and it was really useful to me.Last edited by RethX; 07-02-2010 at 06:44 PM. Reason: adding link.

i would recommend doing a nandroid backup just in case you mess something up and need to back to what you had iced honeybun v 3.6 is faster and doesnt have all the twitter and facebook ect. to boot into recovery power down hold down home and power and you will get a screen with 5 or six options in green you can do a nandroid from there to load a rom you need to put it on the root of your sd card select wipe select wipe data factory reset then select wipe dalvik go back to the menu and select flash zip from sd card the file you selected will show up select it and and follow the instructions after it is done select reboot first boot will take a while

Flashing the google stuff is the same as flashing any ROM. Download Darchstar's ROM and Google ****s files then flash via the phones recovery.
Most ROMs are overclocked and widgets are available in the market to give control of the clockspeed. Here is how-to for controlling Androids built in Task-killer: http://www.androidcentral.com/fine-t...#comment-43383
It's a good read on the OS and shows will show you how to set the parameters to start killing apps without the use of a task killer application. - 07-02-2010, 11:07 PM

IcedHoneyBun v3.whatever is loading right now. To "flash google stuff", do I basically just do exactly what I just did with the ROM and it just installs the Google stuff? I'm assuming I wouldn't need to wipe beforehand?

Hi, I just loaded Darchdroid 2.7 and it's great! Question though, I can't seem to find the screen where I enter my Gmail account information in order to get my contacts, calendar, etc. syncing.
It's really weird. I couldn't find it in settings, so then I went to Contacts and tried to add an account, but it only lets me add an Exchange account there. I added my Gmail in the Email app, but that isn't getting my contacts syncing either.
Anyone know if I am missing something totally obvious? - 07-03-2010, 08:36 AM

Ahhh I get it. Wiping is like a quick format - and flashing just pushes folders and files into their respective directories?
Anyway - I have IcedHoneyBun-v.3.6 installed, but to be honest I don't notice a single difference except the ability to have multiple browser windows and the WiFi hotspot thing... I still have Sense, all the Google stuff, all the Sprint stuff, it doesn't seem any faster... I don't see any way to uninstall the Sprint stuff manually (you said that there was a file manager to do that?) and I don't see any way to store apps2sd.
What the heck? Did I mess something up or do something wrong? The one hiccup I had was that when I went to wipe the dalvik or whatever the phone told me to do it through root - and I didn't; I just continued. Does that matter?
UPDATE: I guess it still wiped the dalvik -Last edited by etnpnys; 07-03-2010 at 08:40 AM.

I'm trying the DarchDroid right now - basically only because it doesn't have Sense UI. I'm afraid that I will really miss the Sense Keyboard, though... How can I get it back?
- 07-03-2010, 10:50 AM #25
After flashing the rom you have to flash the google sh*ts he has in his post.Read the whole first post,it tells you the process.
Did you read the whole first post on HoneyBun.It tells you how to use Astro to delete sprint crap.As for apps2sd you need to partition your sdcard with a Ext2 or 3.Then apps2sd is automatic.
To get back a stock keyboard grab the one from the HoneyBun thread and try it flashing it(just do a backup).
