@Tre_03 Those are some well taken points. I never really though about that deeply and I'd have to say that It's something to consider. Having voicemail stored locally does make a big difference. I guess the ability to receive text messages or email as voicemail notification makes Voice good to have. Like everything Android, there are pros and cons to using the many options we have available

There are two ways to perform a nandroid backup/restore:

    1. ROM Manager
    -Go into ROM Manger
-Scroll down to Backup and Restore
-Backup saves the exact current state of your phone (data, apps, ROM, texts, etc.)
-Restore lets you restore any of your backups

    2. Recovery
    -Reboot into Recovery
    -Go to Backup and Restore
    -Same as ROM Manager

These are what are being referred to when people talk about nandroid.

I don't think anyone was criticizing your competence. If you took my earlier post as such, then I apologize for it. Just sounds like you don't want to deal with the headache's of finding workarounds for certain parts of the ROM or features originally offered by Sprint that were meant for the stock OS, not custom ROMs like CM7 or aosp.

@Chef, thank you for the clarification.

Follow the steps posted by @Chef to make a backup in recovery. When you select Backup and Restore, you'll see at the top of the screen "Nandroid" in white. Below you should see the options for backup, restore or advanced restore. Nandroid is the term used when creating a backup of your current system. From what I understand, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, "Nandroid" is a script that creates a backup of your phone, or a snapshot if you will. Whoever created the script gave it the name Nandroid.

Can You please explain that Voicemail part?
If I understand that right, then I should restore to my stocked rom which I have backed up a week ago. Then I shoulddownload Titanium Backup and backup stock voicemail app which hopefullu save some data about me and then install this rom, install Titanium Backup and restore that voicemail app.
So what is this Sprint VVM Edify ? I didn't see anything like it.
Last thing. I was testing this asop version for a week and too many calls went to my voicemail with no notice that I was called. Offcourse there might be also calls from people that didn't leave voicemail.
    How to fix that problem?
Now I'm going to install this version. I hope that my "calling/voicemail" error will be fixed.

No. I think you made a backup of CM7, which is Android 2.3. You need to install Android 2.2, either CM6 or aosp. Here is a link to download CM6: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-...28-2010-a.html

Yes. After you have installed CM6 (2.2) and have it setup, install the sprint visual voicemail. You can get a copy of the app here:

Download the "Edify Version" found under Method I. App is towards the end of Method I. You can search XDA for the Visual Voicemail.apk if you want to try and find the regular app. I'm not sure what the difference is. I'd suspect the edify version is a modded version tweaked to work.

I havn't experienced this so I'm not sure. I can only say that maybe you were in a poorly receptive area and signal prevented you from receiving the call. This happens if you are out of coverage and you receive a call. The caller will be directed straight to voicemail and you will not be noticed unless they leave a message.

I have backed up my real stock rom. So is this ok? Should I check what version I got?
I don't think I have poor reception. It's always like that. Now it's just even worse than before.

I'm not 100% sure that it will work with the Stock ROM. I would suspect so, but you never know. Give it a try. Otherwise you may need to do the 2.2 ROM.

With Google Voice, you sign up and receive a phone number. To set it up on your phone, follow the on screen prompts via the web that walk you through the sign-up process. You'll be asked to call a number which will provision your phone to forward the calls to the new google voice number.

People can still call your sprint number and you'll receive the call like normal. Except, when they get your voicemail they'll hear, "the google voice subscriber is unavailable..." you can customize the greeting like any other voicemail.

You can then download the google voice app to your phone and manage the voicemail. You'll have the option to be alerted via email, text message, or both. Voicemails are transcribed (if the message if clear) and will be emailed to you.

You don't ever have to give out your new google voice number unless you want to. People usually use it as a second number for business related things, or forums sales through craigslist, etc. Basically, if you don't want someone to have your personal number, then give them the google voice number. That's how I think of it. There is a video on the google voice page that shows you a little about the service. check it out and see if it's for you. Whenever you switch ROMs you'll just have to download the voice app and complete the setup to get it up and running again. Nothing compared to the sprint app workarounds.

It looks like Sprint and Google have partnered up to allow Sprint Users to use their current number to use Google Voice. This might be something to look into if you decide to go the Google Voice route sometime in the near future.

I know of no other option, other than the two provided on the WiKi Page, to get the app to work so you may need to switch to a 2.2 ROM if it's a deal breaker. The problem occurs with both AOSP and CM7 2.3 ROMs.

You can use whatever you like CM6 is 2.2, CM7 is 2.3.

There are several 2.2 ROMs for the Heroc, Cyanogenmod based ROMs generally follow the "CM" distinction. You can try the CM6 ROM to compare it to your current 2.2 ROM and see which suits you best.

    ok, I did it
    I finally installed it right.
Now, how to block this 9016 number that sends me text message each time I receive voicemail? Is there such option to block the number?
I also tried to do same thing on my wife's Hero. So I launched Hero Rooter 1.3. I connected the phone, changed to Sync and... I rooted it. Then I wanted to do backup. So I downloaded Titanium Backup but every time I try to open it, it showes me that this cell is not rooted. I'm stuck, please help.
    I can't do backup.
I downloaded Rom Manager and I did backup in it but... what is the difference between backup under Rom Manager and backup under Titanium Backup?
I think only TB gives me a chance to restore separate app...

Glad you got it to work and can enjoy the phone

For your wife's phone, we need to verify you actually have root access. Open Titanium Backup and click on the Overview tab. on the lower right you'll see "problems?". Click that and read through the information to problem solve. You should update the Super User App and BusyBox as provided in that help window. You should be good to go once you have updated those two.

If not, then you will need to make sure the root process worked. This can be verified by downloading "Terminal Emulator" from the market and opening it. Type su (followed by enter) and wait for the screen to request root access. You'll then see a return of # (instead of $). The # means you have root access and should be good. If the $ appeared after hitting enter then you need to try the root app again.

Let us know how things go.

Good to see that you got it working Hope your wife enjoys the phone.

If anyone is interested, I came across this mod that allows you to change the "Sprint" name when charging and when you pull down the notification bar:

It's pretty easy, just read through the how-to a few times to familiarize yourself with it. Pretty cool mod

** It only workes with aosp or CM based ROMs **

So after I got new rom and everything is going better, then are there more tricks? What else can I do with my phone?
Where is that sdk directory from that mod? I can't find it on my phone.

The sdk directory is a download package you get from google. Since you used apps to root the phone you probably don't have it installed. That's just a visual mod that really isn't necessary, just threw it out there.

Here is the xda-developers CDMA Hero forum:

It's very active and the development section is where you'll find other tweaks and mods for the phone. I would suggest taking a look around and read up a lot on the available mods. There's mods to increase your phones memory, called Firerats Mod, Battery Tweaks to prolong battery life based on the phones settings and themed mods. It's a Developer forum so be sure to read up before asking questions or posting new threads. Just a friendly FYI

I've updated the first post with a new release, RC3. To install, download the ROM and flash over the previous RC2 release, a wipe should not be required. If you are using another ROM, make sure to wipe/factory reset, format boot/system/cache/data and flash.

As with any ROM that would affect the system, make a backup (Nandroid) just in case things go wrong and you need to restore a working backup.
