internet connection fails, help me isolate
I have a Sprint HTC Hero that I recently upgraded to 2.1. It's not rooted, and doesn't have many apps installed on it.
Since the upgade, I've been having a terrible time with keeping my events synced with between the phone and Google Calendar. I figured out that the problem is the internet connectivity itself -- I'll find that when I can't get events to sync, web browsing also doesn't work, nor does Google Maps (the ability to pull new map tiles from Google).
This will happen while I have plenty of signal bars indicated, and the "Ev" icon is displayed.
If I turn "Connect to Internet" off and back on (long press on power button, bottom option), then the internet immediately works. So it's not a network signal level issue.
Has anyone else seen this?
Is there somewhere in the phone that I can drill down into to see what might / might not be working? Like some sort of internet connectivity status? Again, I see the "Ev" logo and several bars of signal even when it's not working, so that's no good to rely on.2003 - 2010: Samsung i500 Palm phone (7 yrs!)

I don't have a solution but just wanted to add that I too have been having the exact same issue.
I just toggle airplane mode and my connection comes right back up. This solution is far from ideal and have posted about it before. Beezy420 is also aware of it and is looking at possible causes and hopefully a solution.
Btw, this has been an issue for me since day one, even before rooting but, it still persists. - 06-23-2010, 06:04 PM

for me its usually when i am using my WiFi then get out of range, it seems to have trouble then. Also if you ARE in range then phone goes to sleep (so does WiFi) and when i wake her up its kinda like me finding the bathroom in the morning if i havent found my glasses yet, ya know its not happening.

I hardly ever use WiFi, so that's not it.
Another possible symptom of dead internet connection: no weather info on the home screen under the clock.
From the ROM dev thread ...
See which radio software you have:
Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information -> Baseband version
1.4***is older; 2.***is newer
I've got 2.42.01.04.27 . I assume this was part of the 2.1 upgrade.
In the ROM thread, beezy talks about "updating profile" but I'm not sure that's related to a general loss of data connectivity. Here's what the Sprint HTC Hero users guide () says about this:
I realize that perhaps some of you all have solved these problems with custom ROMs, but I'm not going there. I just want to try to isolate where this problem is, so perhaps we'll ease HTC's effort in fixing this with a future update (a man can dream).Finding Your User Name
If you aren’t sure what your user name is, you can easily find it on your device.
Settings > About phone > Status, and then scroll down to Current username.
Updating Your User Name
If you choose to change your user name and select a new one online, you must then update the user name on your device.
Settings > About phone > System updates > Update profile.
So, is there anywhere that anybody's found in the phone that shows data connectivity status?
(Beezy, I went to donate to your coffee pot fund but instead of getting a PayPal page I got a prompt to "download webscr". Got another link?)Last edited by ChrisC; 06-24-2010 at 10:47 AM.
