I'm new to Android rooting and just wanted some help. I attempted to root my wife's Hero, but stopped on step 9 of Regaw's guide found here: [GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero - xda-developers

Apparently I should have downgraded to .5 from whatever I was currently at. I don't want her to lose information on her phone and I was afraid that downgrading would do just that. If anyone could help me I'd appreciate it greatly!

Yes, you will lose the phones information. Backup all contacts with google, backup the sd card just in case (it's not necessary though), backup all your apps with titanium backup (paid) or appbrain.

There is an SMS backup/restore app in the market for free that is good and easy to use.
