Just picked up an HTC Hero at a local Sprint store on Sat 10/10. Loving it so far.

I'm on the hunt for a good screen protector in a store because I don't want to have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. Any ideas? Will a screen protector for another HTC device work? I just need it to cover the screen, don't care if it's not especially contoured for the Hero.

I have my 16GB microSDHC on order so that should be here Tuesday and I don't plan on putting any cases on it since the phone is stunning when it's naked.

You're gonna have to go with a universal one; or maybe check out the MyTouch screen protectors at the T-Mobile stores.

Hey everyone. I currently have a pre and would like to also have a hero. I have been having trouble deciding how to do this since sprint doesn't have SIM cards. I was wondering if any of you could shed some light as to what type of data plan(s) you are using and if you have 2 lines and what not? Do you think its worth getting both? I love the Pre and have always wanted an Android phone. Also, do you know if there is any type of modding/ homebrew scene for Android? Any help would be awesome. Thanks so much!

Gave up my PRE too!!

I tell you what! In the past few months, I have used the Palm Pre, the Blackberry Tour... and now, I have simply experienced something worth all the hype: The HTC Hero on Sprint. I love it. This phone rocks!! In my humble opinion, it can do all the BB can do and more, and it's OS blows away the Palm Pre. I can't wait to see all that it can do!

as far as plans go, for a single line the 69.99 450 everything data plan is unbeatable... you get unlimited texts, data usage, and best of all, unlimited calls to ANY cell phone on ANY carrier as long as it's a US number and you're on Sprint's network (not roaming).

If you want to have both phones with two lines, then I'd suggest the 1500 everything data share plan that gives you the same unlimited texts, data, and cell phone calls plus 1500 minutes for landline and 800# calls, all for 129.99/mo

I got my Hero at BB and i just bought a pack of the $7.99 universal screen protecters and cut it to fit, they give you a grid to work with, but it was pretty easy to install and it looks great and feels nice, its the only thing you can really do at this point.

Order a 3-pack of Hero screen protectors from Amazon. I'm sure you can hold out for a few days.

I'm coming from the precentral.net forums too. They're a really touchy lot this weekend -- be careful about discussing the Hero over there. ;-)

I just bought a Hero this afternoon and switched my line from my Pre over to the Hero in the store. If I don't think the Hero is better before 30 days, I can take the Hero back and switch my line back to the Pre. I'll be out a $35 restocking fee apparently if I do turn the Hero back in.

Powered by Palm since 1996...
Palm Pilot > Palm V > Tungsten T > Treo 650 > Centro > Pre

Powered by Android since 10/11/2009...

I am curious about the calendar. I have a pre and am considering the switch because of the slow calendar on the pre. How is it on the Hero? I have read the browser is much better on the pre compared to the hero. Your opinion? Thanks in advance!

The calendar was my biggest gripe on the Pre as well. I've only had a couple of hours to use it, but there are several big differences:

1. The Calendar widget can be added to one of the 7 screens in a scene. (This may not make sense unless you watch a few Hero review videos.) This means that the calendar can be very accessible, only a swipe away from the Home screen. With webOS, you have to launch the Calendar and leave it open as a card. My personal preference with webOS is to close apps when I don't need them, so accessing the Hero's calendar wdiget is faster and more convenient for me. Some webOS users don't mind having multiple cards open.

2. There is much, much less lag time in the Hero calendar when switching between days. The response is nearly instantaneous. Clear advantage to the Hero here.

3. The Hero calendar still uses those damned scroll wheels to select the From and To dates, but at least the scroll wheels show the day of the week -- the Pre scroll wheels do not. Also, the Hero scroll wheels are bigger and less "sensitive". It's easier to select the date you want without scrolling past it.

4. The Hero calendar has an Agenda view. There is also an option to view only the appointments in the daily view, or view the entire hour grid for the day. I prefer seeing just the appointments, but unfortunately you can't swipe sideways to change the day you're looking at. Unless I'm mistaken, you have to push the back button to get back to the month view and then pick another day to view. The Pre's compressed time view is very nice -- the Hero doesn't seem to have a comparable option.

5. I am amazed at the number of settings and options offered by Android. You have to patch webOS to add the simplest options, like defaulting the calendar to month view. There's no need to patch Android to add the settings that Palm inexplicably forgot -- they're already there. In this respect at least, Android is definitely a more complete OS than webOS.

I hope that helps. So far, I like the Android calendar better than the Pre's. It syncs with Exchange and other calendars, like Google's, and events from different calendars are displayed. You won't be giving up the Pre's combined calendar views if you switch.

If you think of any specific questions, let me know.

As far as I can tell, if the day view is the agenda or list version, I cannot swipe backwards or forwards. If it is in the full hourly day view I can move day to day. There may be better calendar widgets I have not explored.

I can't believe I forgot the biggest difference between the Pre and Hero calendars!

A SEARCH FUNCTION! This was absolutely driving me crazy on my Pre. It's just bizarre -- no, borderline negligent -- that Palm didn't include any kind of calendar search function in webOS. The Hero has a calendar search function.

Hallelujah. And there was much rejoicing.

Absolutely. I forgot how much I missed my calendar search (when was my dentist appointment? When was that partnership meeting?) I have already loved this feature and I have only had it a few hours!
