Yes you can in settings - sound & display - notification sound. Or you can go into messages - then settings - you can change it there too.
Hope this helps!

That sort of helped, but can I use my own MP3 for a ringtone? All I see are the generic tones in there, but I have an MP3 ringtone for my phone calls. Any help there?

On your SD card, /media/audio/notifications is where you store files to use for app notifications. /media/audio/ringtones is where you store files to use as phone ringtones.

If these folders aren't there, just create them.

I tried that, and the only sounds for notifications are still the original ones. None of my MP3 ringtones went through whenever I added the MP3 files into the /media/audio/notifications folder on my SD card. Any other advice?

Thanks!

Here's what I'd try in order. Check after each step to see if it worked.

1. Check, double check and triple check the path to the files, and the spelling. Won't even go into why I recommend this first ...just say I've been there. :D
2. Reboot the phone.
3. Install Facebook (official Android client). It creates the correct folder on your SD card for it's notification. Then see if the Facebook pop notification is available to use as a tone.
4. Reboot after installing FB.

If none of those work, we can try some more :)

After a reboot it worked. Thanks a lot man. You've really helped me not break my phone because it was going against the wall, and then into at least 3 pieces if that wouldn't have worked.

No problem guys. I'm lucky this month, as work involves mostly recompiling software. Give me a LOT of free time to play with the phone and cruise the interwebs :) Reading Android Dev blogs and source code comments is much more fun than looking at porn lol.

I created the two directories with Astro File Manager, downloaded a notification from the browser and moved into the notifications folder using Astro and it worked fine. I didn't have to reset or anything. I haven't tried the ringtone folder yet.

get ringdroid, it lets you select an MP3 thats on your phone, and it lets you choose a start and end point and then save that clip of the song as whatever type you want, notification, ringtone, etc... and then when you go to change the sound, its right there in the list for you.
