I am new to Android and wanted to know if there was anything special that I needed to do to setup my gmail account? I have searched and was unable to find anything...

There is a gmail app already installed. That's what you'll use on the phone, but you also need to enable POP access in your gmail preferences.

I'm making the switch over also, so this question interests me too. How long is the delay? How are you liking the switch?

As long as you're using the same Gmail address as you signed into the phone with, the Gmail app is damn near instant. Much faster than IMAP on my Pre.

The Mail app is a different story.

I have a delay as well. In fact, I did a test for a whole week and the quickest I got the email was 14 seconds. When I first got the device, using wifi only, it was instantaneous (I think). My Gmail checker on chrome (pc), my Pre & of course my BlackBerry all push, whereas the one I would think would, doesn't.

I can't quite pinpoint the delay...but sometimes I don't even get a notification for new mail...I just need someone to walk me through the setup for gmail on this phone...

IF you are able to enter the Andorid Marketplace your Gmail account should already be setup. If not, at least on Sprint, once you attempt to enter the marketplace it prompts you to enter your Gmail account information. The only other thing I can think of is to go to Settings -> Data Synchronization -> Google and see what happens from there.

Are you sure that you are not using the Mail app? There are two apps that can do email on the Hero - Mail and Gmail. Mail can be set up to do POP and IMAP mail access to any server that supports those protocols, or Exchange Push mail for connection to an exchange server. The Mail app, even with an IMAP protocol set, does not use IMAP push, but polls for messages on a schedule for POP and IMAP mail servers.

The gmail app connects to your gmail account (the one that you used to set up the phone.) It has pretty close to instant push (I hear my phone's notification within a minute of hearing it on my PC when both are running, sometimes on the phone first.) For gmail to synchronize on your phone, from your home screen, you need to go into Settings->Data synchronization->Google and make sure that background processing is checked, as well as gmail.
