Won't boot - Ideas?

My buddy has a MyTouch 4G and the battery was dying and he had put it on the charger and once he plugged it in the device vibrated about 7 times and now it will not turn on. No power lights, no connected to charger light and will not boot up at all. Also, when you unplug and plug it back in it will still vibrate around 7 times. Already switched out batteries with a known good one and still no luck. Also put the battery from the damaged one in a known working device with no problems.

Is this handset fried? Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Its possible that the volume button is stuck or broken. Pressing the volume button up while powering on will cause that issue. Try holding the volume button down & pressing power at the same time and see if you enter the bootloader.

The volume button is fine. It won't boot up at all no matter which route I take. Won't even go into boot loader.
