Im trying to rot my note 8 and was wondering if I could do it just on my device, but need someone to walk me through it.

That's the section for the Note 8!

As for rooting from the device itself, I believe it is not possible without a custom recovery.

If you mean without a computer then you might be out of luck. I have seen methods that claim to work through the browser on your tablet, but for the most part they don't work as advertised.
Definitely post in the Note 8.0 forums though, maybe someone knows of a way

Are you trying posting from your phone or a PC?

If it's from a phone, you need either the AC Forums app or tapatalk. Go to the forum section and click the pencil icon.

On the PC, it's a button on the top left of the screen.

Anyone got the steps to doing the unlocking then rooting etc to a Google Play Edition 4.4? The version that is safest, stable one available that is close as possible to the original?

Ok, now open that folder. Copy the directory of that folder by clicking the bar in the Windows Explorer on the top and then pressing Ctrl+C. Open a command prompt or CMD and type "cd". After "cd", right click and paste the directory you just copied.

It should look like "cd *directory* " where directory is again, the one you just copied.

Click on the navigation bar like you would in a browser.
