Google Authenticator and Apps

I cannot work out how to check/copy the Authenticator code on my phone when opening a new app on the same phone. I would be signing in to the app, using Google Account, when it asks me for the code. I have to open the Authenticator to get the code. But when I come back to the app to enter the code, I am at the start of the process again. By the time I reach the enter Code again, the code has changed.
How do I keep an app open and just switch back to it?

Welcome to Android Central! Have you tried going back to the app using the Recent Apps button?

My teenage son solved it! Apparently on this HTC 1 I have to double tap the home button to show all open apps, which allows quick switching. I had been holding the Home buton and ending up in Google Now, etc.

Glad you figured it out! I wasn't aware that the One doesn't have a separate Recent Apps button.
