Number next to name on favorites list (HTC One M7)

Searched the forums, searched the user guide, no luck
On one of the home screens, I have nine Favorite contacts
Each has an assigned function when I tap the facial icon (call Mobile, call home, etc.)
Occasionally a number appears in a small red circle next to their name.
Trying to figure out what the number means.
Missed call? Missed text? Birthday? Anniversary?
Stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

So far I discovered that one of the reasons a number might show up after the person's name in the Favorites section is when they sent a text. But that doesn't account for all the numbers because sometimes the numbers are there and no text, email or phone call from them.

Are those contact linked to Facebook also? Could be the culprit.. maybe they've messaged, tagged, something via there

No Facebook on the phone, and one of the Favorites that had a number next to his name is definitely not in Facebook.
