You need to fastboot flash recovery (insert name of recovery here).img in if you don't know how to get into fastboot mode, you should Google it. Watch some YouTube videos. Is your bootloader unlocked?

the only way you will lose your custom recovery is if you manually flash it back to the stock one yourself, or if you install OTA firmware updates, I believe those include recovery images as well.

If you're already rooted and just looking to update or replace your custom recovery I'd suggest just downloading Flashify from the Play Store, grant root access, click Flash Recovery Image on the main page and it will direct you to the proper download link (always ensure the download's description matches your phone's build name). Then Flashify will take care of the rest.

I was able to change from CWM to Philz Touch easily without any fastboot hassle. No computer or USB necessary.
