They're done with Beats but goodriddance, it was a poorly done gimmick anyway. By all accounts I've seen so far, it's 25% louder now and sounds cleaner.

I've bought 3 HTC's in a row (Rezound, DNA, One), listen to a lot of music on my phones, and the way Beats sounds on my Beats ear buds has been a large deciding factor each time. To each their own. I hope HTC has learned enough technically to produce as appealing a sound profile on the M8 as Beats was to me on past phones.

If you want to replicate Beats audio you can use Viper4Android. It will probably sound even better.

It's a mediocre algorithm that can make weak headphones sound fuller but the side effects are such that many find it too detrimental to the overall sound quality to tolerate. Beats products are considered gimmicky by most audio enthusiasts and professionals, and rightfully so.
With that said, I work in the professional audio field and I've based my business on the fact that everyone's tastes are legitimate, so I mean no offense to you if you enjoy Beats. No one can tell another person what they should enjoy.

Yeap. Beats products are like Bose products - they use cheapest possible components and materials (though some Bose products are pretty well-made) and just try to find an "averagely" pleasing (to majority of general population) sound through some basic software sound equalization. Which you can do by yourself if you have good music player with multiple-band equalizer

It's increases bass, that is all. Download a equalizer and you'll get the same or better. Beats are for suckers.

It's a whole lot better. Beats was dragging it down.Review of audio by GSMarena
"The HTC One (M8) audio quality is by far the best we've seen a mobile device produce so far - and that's including tablets. Even its impressive predecessor pales in comparison with the latest HTC flagship, which is not only the loudest around, but also delivers perfectly clean output.

The HTC One (M8) did perfectly in the active external amplifier part of the test, posting great scores all over the field. In addition it had volume levels higher than every other mobile device on the market right now.

More impressively, there's virtually no degradation when you plug in a pair of headphones. The stereo crosstalk rises so little that it remains better than what some smartphones deliver without headphones. The rest of the readings remain perfect too, while the volume is as high as they come. What do you know - dropping the Beats logo actually led to even more spectacular performance by the HTC flagship."

When you listen to the BoomSound speakers, you'll see how great the sound is.

M8s Boomsound speakers are fabulous. Very lively, rich, and full sound from such a tiny package.

I'm coming from an EVO 4GLTE that had Beats, and I can assure you that Boomsound is light years better than beats with headphones. Not to mention the amazing front speakers.

The stereo separation through the front speakers just shouldn't be possible with them being so close to each other but it's uncanny.
Headphones also sound brilliant (using poweramp) and the headphones are much louder and cleaner sounding than any previous phone I have owned.

Absolutely. I noticed that too. Some people try to dismiss it because it's too far away to be effectively "stereo" but that's not the point. Having the sound split into stereo takes a burden off of a single speaker and allows for much better clarity, even at a distance. Great separation and a wonderful sense of depth, compared to what we expect from a phone.

If you're referring to the phone's speakers, they blew me away with the quality in my music. This is the first HTC device I've owned though, so I don't know how they fared in the past.

But I absolutely love the speaker quality.

As others have said, to each their own. I'm not a fan of Beats, so I'm glad they parted ways. That said, the audio quality of the phone is great. They did essentially replace the Beats profile with BoomSound.

I find Boomsound makes crappy headphones sound decent but good headphones sound much better (more natural) without it

I'd like the audio professionals in the thread to recommend an app and the best settings to mirror the sound I get from my M8 or M7. If its all in the equalizer then I should be able to get my Nexus 5 to sound just as good in my car, right?

There are other factors involved, such as the method of travel (D/A converter, Bluetooth, etc). And, Beats is a little more than EQ, there's some compression, gain, and possibly spacial manipulation in the stereo field. Nothing special as far as audio enhancement goes and you can probably find apps that do similar things (I never looked). If it's a dynamic algorithm, you're not going to replicate it.
But, as stated initially, if you are relying on something like the phone's headphone jack (A/D converter) there is going to be a difference in quality that can't be compensated for.

Not too mention the M8 also got a new amp although not sure if that's just for the speakers or the headphone output as well.
