Backing up and syncing phone contacts to google

hi. just switched from a Ip5 and the tmobile store transferred my numbers for me. my google contacts folder is empty. how do i take the numbers from my phone and have them backed up/synced with my google contacts. this would involve a method wherein the entries are generated in google contacts. is this possible? i am on a mac. still a newb. be nice.

Open the People app, hit the three dot overflow menu button (upper right of screen), manage contacts and select select copy contacts then follow the on screen popups
