Default HTC One M8 micro sd card

    Hi,

Feel free to move to correct place if I'm posting in the wrong one.

Was looking into getting the SanDisk 64Gb Ultra MicroSDXC Class 10 card for my new M8 then thought I'd have a quick read on here...

Found a lot of posts suggesting Class 6 and below only would work and nothing above and also that a lot of people had issues with copying/moving larger files to the SD card from internal memory using apps such ES file explorer (which I would wish to do, say after downloading a torrent file to my phone - I'm on unlimited data and intend to fully use it)

Anyway, to clarify I chatted with HTC's online support team and asked upfront regarding type of microsd card, as I was unable to find these details on their website:

"The phone does support the SDXC specification without reformatting and Classes 2-10, as well as U1 and U3 should be supported. A minimum of class 10 is recommended for Zoe. This should theoretically allow for speeds of 160+Mb/s."

So I've just put in an order for this:

Grateful for any opinions on this.

    Thanks

Thanks for reassurance, just placed the order. Thought the chat from the HTC would be useful to clarify for anyone else worried regarding Class 10 speeds on the M8 so posted it above.

Since you ordered SanDisk, you should be fine. I am using the same brand. I would strongly recommend to format the micro card in PC using fat32 configuration. Initially, M8 would not let me transfer certain files (error message: not allowed). You may want to check out the following thread just in case you get into any type of writing issues with the card:

Yep ^This^ I always format on the phone, then unmount, eject, pop into the computer, load my stuff and back in the phone...

The issues regarding moving files to and from the sd card are related to Kit Kat, not HTC. All phones running android 4.4.2 Kit Kat will have the same limitation. You can thank Google for that

Yes, and google sucks for that, but HTC neglected to put a basic file explorer of their own (as Samsung does) which would have worked.

You should format on a pc but not in fat32. You should format in exfat. Fat32 only allows 4gb or smaller files. Exfat does not have a size restriction.

You shouldn't let the phone do it. See my post above.

Once it's formatted, can you explore the device and external memory on a PC in Mass Storage mode? (I.e.; like a thumb drive?)

Well HTC doesn't have a way to enable mass storage mode when connected to a pc (it acts like a media player) but I have found that you can still manage stuff on your card if you open the media device icon that appears in "my computer"

I just received a SanDisk Ultra 64GB MicroSDXC Class 10 card. On Amazon's product page is says this:

Reformat into file system other than exFAT may cause instability
Only compatible with SDXC enabled device in exFAT format per SD Standard
Highest Full HD video recording performance available with class 10 rating
Ideal for Android, other smartphones and tablets
    UHS-1 enabled

So do I need to reformat the card on my PC? It sounds like it's already formatted with exFAT. Anything else I should know?

    Thanks.

    Followup:

After backing up my original SD card, I formatted the SanDisk 64 GB card in my computer (it came with an adapter). I used the exFAT option. I was able to copy the backed up data onto the new card, and all is working well so far.
