This is something else, unless you have the Developer Edition M8, in which case yes, you already have this. But the added compatibility is now with non-developer phones, where you can use the Google Now Launcher as a Launcher replacement for your phone if you like the feel of 'vanilla' Android.

Don't see the point of it. I can activate Google now from any screen on my M8 anyway, even the locked screen. Sure you only have to slide up from the home button to see Google now cards

It's not Google Now. It replaces your stock launcher, much like Nova or Apex, with Google Now built in. Just download and give it a try...
