HTC One M8 front-facing camera distortion/stretch

No, no, no... not this again! Decided to take some selfies to test the front-facing camera and noticed it stretches the edges of the photos.

I was so convinced on buying this phone I forgot to even test it out in-stores to check if the front-facing camera was still an issue like it was on the M7. I also bought it from an online Australian store, but imported, so I can't be bothered returning it. It seems like the S5 and a few other models have this issue?

I have already tried changing the settings by going to crop and then changing it from wide to standard. Standard helps to reduce the distortion A BIT, and square is better but still distorted.

These photos are just shocking. I will post them anyway for the sake of science and hilarity.

Does anyone else have this problem? :(

Even the more centred photo stretches my forehead. As if it's not big enough!!

Re: HTC One M8 front-facing camera distortion/stretch

After a bit more research, I now know it's because of the small sensor and wide lens, or something.

The "standard" crop seems to help A LOT so I'll keep it on this setting. Such a shame that this is still a problem though and selfie-rs have to position themselves a certain way to avoid looking like a total cone head.

Re: HTC One M8 front-facing camera distortion/stretch

Its a common trait of wide angle lenses.

At least now you have the choice of cropping out the distortion. Just try to keep your face in the centre of the shot. And try to remember any distorted parts of the image wouldn't exist on a normal lens. They would just be cut out.

Try getting a compact camera and putting it as close to your face as your phone to compare how much additional information a wide lens will give you, and then you might change your view on it :)

I love UWA lenses, and have come to love the distortion that they create, although not so much when taking portraits.
