The HTC One is their "do or die" device and they gambled everything in it. Despite good reviews, as you know, they are still losing. The Beats buyback is just another salt to injury. So they lost the gamble. You're looking at the consequence. Still, despite the shortcomings, it still looks pretty neat, and HTC should be given credit for that.

Yeahp. It's a HTC One...Max. Still, if you want a large and powerful phablet its a nice competitor for the Note 3.

I don't think they are releasing this as a Q4 flagship, but rather as another option available for their Q2 winner the One. More of a S4, S4 active type of option rather than a separate line like S4 vs Note 3. In that regard, it's obviously an improvement over the One if you value a larger size, the addition of removable storage, the addition of the fingerprint scanner, etc, but if you're looking for a totally distinct device, that's probably Q1 or Q2 of 2014's offering. At that time I'd expect a different processor, different camera, etc.

No no no not even a competitor to the 5s!! I mean I get the skimp on some things but come on. Not even dual lte for sprint or verizon? Seriously? No OIS which was already in the ONE? Smh !!

Calm down, man. You sound like Peter Chou stole your lunch or something. What I mean is they still manage to make a quality device instead of another Desire. Also one thing we tech community always forget is that we are the minority. Look at your first post and tell me if the regular "is that a new Galaxy?" crowd can understand half of what you wrote. That is the market HTC is trying to sell. They probably can outspec the Note 3, but at what cost? Even a miniscule difference in price between S600 and S800 will matter a lot when you factor in millions of devices, not to mention it is already complicated to manufacture to begin with. If they can sell this well, then probably they can afford to make another phone as good as the One next time. If not, well, you know what would happen.

They put a 5.9" screen. To some that's quite a lot.

It's starting to look like you don't really care for the One Max. I'm not sure though, it's just starting to look that way.

I think this might be a matter of managing expectations. If you wanted a note competitor, they didn't do that. Its more like a mega than a note. If you wanted a really big One, they did that pretty well.

I don't know, it has 2GB of RAM, a very capable processor, plenty of storage, a large hi-rez screen. It's a lot better to me than the Mega. I see it as a One with a larger screen. ...and given that the One is rated as "the best" Android phone in the latest round-up (unless there's been an update I missed), that's saying a lot. If it had 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 800 would it be better? Yes, but its still quite the phone.

I'm not sure it would be better... in the real world. It'd obviously have higher theoretical performance, but the One doesn't lag now. I'd agree that the One is still top 3, at least until the nexus announcement. Then can reshuffle the list

I'm somewhat disappointed also. It's very much a big screened One, but it does take a step back in some areas.

    1) Snapdragon 600 - It's not a step back per se, and it's not a bad chip at all, but the expectation was Snapdragon 800 (at least that's what I was hoping for). It offers improved performance and battery life. I feel like it was supposed to have it, but didn't for some reason.

    2) Storage - I thought we were done with high-end phones having a 16gb option. The One is 32/64, so this is a clear step back.

    3) SD card - Seriously? It has one? That's terrible and is a definite step in the WRONG direction for HTC.

    4) Design/build/materials - It looks much more like a larger One Mini than a larger One. Same plastic rimmed edge, the trademark difference between the One and One Mini. Actually, maybe that's what this is, and if that's the case then yes, this is a step "up" from the Mini. But then, so is the regular One.

    5) Camera - No OIS (optical image stabilization). Why not? They already have the camera module in house.

All-in-all this is not a new flagship device IMO. This is a way for HTC to try and get a small chunk of the "too big" phone market. It's not a Note 3 competitor, though. You lose too much getting the Max vs the Note 3.

The best we can hope for is that this is priced really well and represents a great deal for those that don't care about stylus support but want/need a larger screen.

Sense 5.5 does look to have some nice changes, though, and I do want that on my One.

I'd agree fully. I'd like to think that #1 was made as a sound call between value add, cost, return and sales impact... But I wasn't in that meeting.

Another thing is the timing. My guess is they plan to unveil this at IFA, but the Beats buyout and lack of S800 availability made them cancel that. Beats notwithstanding, it could have been a good contender with Note 3 and Z1 had they release it earlier.

What I don't get is the back is removable, but yet it has a sealed embedded battery. At least it's a decent size, but how long is it going to take to charge it? I'd rather have the option of a spare battery (like my Note 2) and just swap it out on the fly to get back to a full charge within minutes. I seriously may have given this phone some consideration if it had a user replaceable battery, even at the cost of losing the S-Pen, as I really like the screen size (disappointed the Note 3 screen wasn't bigger). But alas, no dice. Sealed/embedded = absolute deal breaker for me.

They haven't had removable batteries in their high end phones for two years.

Why do people think that's going to change?

Curious to see how iFixit will rate this one because of the back. The HTC One received the lowest score ever (fittingly, 1 out of 10) and considered near impossible to be repaired by the user.

I understand that, but was holding out hope they had reconsidered, especially when I saw it had a removable back cover. Oh well, their loss.

I'm definitely disappointed. All I wanted was 32gb internal storage - with or without MicroSD - the Snapdragon 800 for its stronger gpu and battery savings and a 3000mAh or larger battery. All of those seemed like they'd be a given at this point in that large of a device, especially considering htc has already done some of that in the One already.

To reduce internal storage to 16gb, keep the same processor, remove OIS was just a poor decision. 16gb really needs to die for internal storage and I won't go into detail of my loathing of memory card performance and why that's on the way out too.

This is more of a larger Mini than a large One and in the US market it's pretty much guaranteed to fail in sales, worse than the HTC One which was a solid phone. Why would htc expect it to do better when it's an upsized downgrade over their flagship?

Oh HTC, I was looking forward to rocking a max and would have even traded my excellent One for it. But with what you just announced I don't see too many One owners trading and most looking at a phone that size will now go with the Note 3 just cause it offers more internal storage + MicroSD and a better processor.

    Exactly.

I always wanted a One, but with a larger screen and expandable memory. In the Max, I'm getting exactly that, plus a fingerprint scanner. Win, win!

If you want a Note, get a Note. If you want a bigger One, with a bit of icing, get the Max. It's as simple as that! Why all the moaning?
