Rogue handset or just generally an awful phone?

I’ve had my HTC One Mini 2 for about 4 months now. I can't believe a phone can be this terrible. It's truly awful.
It's slow – takes up to 10 seconds on average (but often longer...much longer) to switch back to the home screen
Apps crash constantly – it's worse with third party apps but they all crash regularly. HTC live help talked me through doing a cache partition wipe on it which made no noticeable improvement at all.
It switches itself off/restarts itself at least once a day, sometimes more often (it’s done it twice in the last 4 hours).
It often takes up to 30 seconds for the screen to respond when you pick up the phone to use it.
And now I’ve just used it and the screen won’t power down so it’s just sitting here killing battery - this is a new development. It hasn't done this before.

Is this just a cheap and nasty phone and such poor performance is to be expected (I’ve only had iPhones before so I don’t know what to expect from Android and other manufacturers) or have I got a rogue handset that I need to take back to the shop?

Welcome to Android Central! It clearly shouldn't be performing like that. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode, which disables all 3rd party apps? If the phone performs normally in Safe Mode, then some app or apps you installed are likely causing the issue. https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10853

Thanks for the response. I actually ended up taking it back to the store and the tech guy I spoke to thought it might be a power problem. It's been sent for repair/replacement.
