    Default One S on AT&T?

Will AT&T be getting the One S? If not, can the T-mobile or international version be used on AT&T?

I haven't heard a peep about it on any other carrier. T-Mobile likely has exclusivity in the US for 6 months. You could buy the unlocked international version, if you didn't mind shelling out full retail in one chunk.

Is the unlocked one compatible with AT&T's HSPA?

Does AT&T have any of these bands in the US?

HSPA/WCDMA Europe/Asia: 850/900/2100 MHz / Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz / (Band frequency, HSPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent)

Did you have to root it or did it just work with an AT&T micro-SIM out of the box?

You can pay to get it unlock. Around $14-20, you can use AT&T and several others who has GSM network. Google unlock htc phones.
