Why I took back my AT&T One X

I pre-ordered the One X and received it in on May 4th ahead of schedule.. I loved it.. Loved the screen and was in the honeymoon stage with the phone (so everything is always great).. I was coming from a Galaxy SII Euro-Unlocked..

A couple things I was looking for in my next phone..
1) I had an iphone for so long and I really liked the lock/unlock button on the top so I was looking for that but wasn't a big deal if not
2) Wanted a better camera phone
3) Very much dislike touchwiz and would always put a different launcher on it so I wanted to try out Sense since it looked pleasant without having to put something else overtop of it

I tried out the Galaxy Note and I really liked that as well but just too too too darn big.. I really do love the 4.3-4.5 inch range.. Just fits so nicely in my hand.. So this One X was kind of big as well.. But I am a techie so I want the latest and greatest and it seems all the higher end ones are going bigger.. (which not really a fan of)

Now down to the details.. The One X was too big but that was a preference and therefor not going to be a deal breaker for other people.. The biggest issue IMHO is that HTC has messed up on the multitasking.. Now I have been through what seems like a million forums across a bunch of websites and there is definitely an issue there.. It isn't true multitasking.. It holds whatever you were doing in the background and then when you hop back in there (no matter if it is 10 seconds or 10 minutes) it will hold and fade out and then start the app over.. Try it with your browser! Some say it's the Ram.. some say it's other things.. But whatever it is.. It isn't right..

Second thing is that Sense crashes quite a lot.. I read that the HTC agenda widget was causing some of this but obviously no confirmation from HTC themselves yet.. But I had this thing just restart without any clue what happened.. and sometimes it wouldn't even power back on for a good 5 minutes..

Now I know we are all beta testers (as per nokia lol) but I just couldn't handle all the bugs and wait for a updated firmware (whenever that would be). I had 30 days so I just took it back and i'll wait on either a definite fix on that phone or I'll look toward the Galaxy SIII (which I wasn't really excited about), or other phones that come out..

I really liked Sense and I think HTC has a great piece of hardware there.. The camera IMO was great and I loved the interface for it as well. Having both camera and camcorder buttons on there was great.. I believe it's a great phone and will be once things are ironed out.. But I just wanted to give a heads up on some things..

PS.. I never have rooted so I am not sure if some of these things can be fixed when a dev has a custom rom for it.. So if you are into rooting you might be able to go that route!

Any questions or criticism is always encouraged :-)

Good post. I do have to say I'm a bit concerned after reading your post and others. Seems like there are a fair amount of bugs with this phone, which is a shame because I was looking forward to getting it as my upgrade. Now I have a bit of dilemma: hold out for bug fixes, give the GS3 a shot, or grab a GNex.

Interesting points...

I'm still getting use to mine currently. I posted a thread about how to get the volume keys or the screen to come on without pressing the power button. I'm a long time iPhone user (and BlackBerry, and older Android devices), and a user, icebike, stated in essence, that I should simply go back to iOS. Honestly!

I'm into trying the latest gadgets, and if it didn't meet all your needs by the 29th day, sure, return it. But, you know, quite a few times when a new device is released, it is almost best to wait a while before getting it, hence a newer OS is released to fix all the bugs. Example the current WIFI one for the One X. An expected time frame of a fix, is end of May, as per HTC...

Try it with something OTHER than your browser. Its strictly a browser issue. And Chrome does not behave that way.

To come in with no more evidence than a browser test and claim that HTC managed to screw up Multitasking in Android is ludicrous! You can start your recorder, or stream some music, at the same time you surf the web, check some email, take some photos, and it keeps on doing all those things that make sense to do.

But hey, you already sent it back so it doesn't matter.

What I said, is that you should learn to accept Android for what it is, without trying to make it into an iPhone, but if you could not do that, then perhaps you would be happier with an iphone.

I'm not so much of an Android biggot that I think its right for everyone, some people like iPhone better.

But its kind of like me logging in to iMore forums (after a week of iphone ownership) and asking how I can remove that big button on the face of the iPhone so I could turn it on with a volume toggle. They would call me crazy.

I, on the other hand, suggested you may be happier with the iPhone if having to press the top button is going to be a stumbling block for you in Android.

...point taken, like anything (Windows XP to Windows 7), its a learning curve. We as humans tend to gravitate to what we know and what we're used to.

Anyway, I'm still plodding along with my One X, and learning all the ins and outs of it via the forums, etc.

Dearest icebike.. You're right.. I did only try it with the browser and nothing other than the browser.. Must be just me that is having this problem then..

Be real man.. of course I tried it with other apps.. I have seen other people post on other forums that they haven't had any issues at all with multitasking so maybe you are on that train but tried speedtest and would start it.. then leave it for 5 seconds (and counted 5 seconds) then would go back into it and it would refresh and would say "start test".. not "restart test".. and if you looked in the history it would show that it didn't record the test i just started.. On my GSII it would just keep running in the background until it was done.. On an iphone it would stop just like the HTC One X was doing..

and before you answer with.. "try it with something OTHER than the browser and speedtest".. I tried it with a bunch of apps..

I'm not saying that like google music will stop running in the background.. that isn't the case at all.. I'm saying like google+ and messaging app and everything would be holding and would have to be refreshed and would freeze a bit.. Check the link I just posted from Youtube.. It shows it there..

Ardrid,

I really like the GNex and I would get it but I want a phone with a better camera.. I was holding out for the GS3 and was kind of disappointed with hardware.. The added bells and whistles they have is nice and all but I really don't like Touchwiz.. But Still other launchers are nice.. Plus I kind of wanted to get away from a physical home button as the GSII button was annoying me lol..

But I am waiting on the fixes for the HTC One X.. see what happens.. I'll just stick to the GSII for now and maybe learn how to root to keep me entertained..

Naviwilliams,

I had every iphone since it came along in 2007 and was loving them. but then after while they just got boring and too locked down for even the simplest things.. I knew I wanted an android phone but they were just not as smooth and fluid and that was keeping me from switching for awhile..

I tried the samsung captivate but it was still too buggy and couldn't keep it too long.. Finaly got the galaxy SII last May and was done with the iphone.. I still like to mess around with an iphone now and then just because I do miss some things but overall android is much more enjoyable and widgets are worth it for me.. I use them for mostly everything..

The learning curve is there but like you said.. the forums help so much and I look at them everyday for tips and info.. enjoy the android life..

i have had none of the bugs with my att hox its been performing great i would just get it and make your own opinions some people have issues and some well are like hypochondriacs because it doesn't act like their previous phone then its something wrong with it. judge for yourself you have 30 days with att to return and get your money back or get another phone you are in a win situation either way. ohhhhhh my leg hurts i said this in a thread now its 40 strong with people saying their leg hurts. i just kidding but for real environment plays a big role in some of these issues and i and there are a large number of euro versions having some issues doesn't mean yours will give it a chance homie.

Hmm.. Well I am also having a major multitasking issue with my One X. I put up a video of it compared to my Omnia 7 with WP Mango (which many believe to have the worst multitasking).

who or how many is we? i am multi tasking like a mutha and have no issues its to each its own so folks don't like it bottom line is i can push a button and flip a card up or in windows case swype anyway i click the one i want and its right where i left off what is the big deal? now if the phone restarts or does some funky jitter bug deal then i would go nuts but you have your right to your opinion i think the multi task is fine and the again maybe i don't know what the heezie i am talking about you never know i am just saying thats all. but on a serious tip can you get me some official numbers , thats me a numbers guy that puts reliability on someone if millions are having multi task issues folks complained about apples multi task when it was release i remember it like it was yesterday oh its not true multi task then came wp7.5 oh thats not true multi task, now this

Well if you pay attention to the video you see that WINDOWS PHONE 7 (the one that doesn't have true multitasking) doesn't need to reload anything. Then you see the HTC ONE X needs to RELOAD web pages and Pulse. You will see that I am not where I left off in the Pulse news reader app.

I do like the phone, just pointing out a major issue. My guess is you are about as far as can be from a numbers guy, you sound ignorant. Does Boost Mobile even offer the HTC One X?

It is not a major issue, its just different. It works exactly the same way on ICS on the galaxy nexus.

thanks for your post!
I was eligible for an upgrade last month and I almost did it! then I heard rumors about samsung galaxy s3 and as a result htc was not a choice any more.
maybe i should wait for another month to see what will happen in the google io. a new nexus?

That's interesting because other Galaxy Nexus folks on XDA were claiming it wasn't normal. I entered the letters "test" into the Google search bar on Google.com went to my contacts and went back to Google and the letters "test" were gone. I am pretty sure that is NOT normal and NOT multitasking. If it ends up being the case that is fine but just means Android multitasking has gone BACKWARDS since I owned my Evo 4g.

Multitasking for me on ky one x is worse than my old blackberry storm and lightyears behind my playbook.

It happens with a lot of apps. Play store, browser, opera, tapatalk, reader just to name a few. I can't even leave an app to check a text message without it reloading the previous app when I go back.

I still love the phone but multitasking definately needs to be fixed when a 3 year old blackberry does it better.

i had the gnex it did the same thing. maybe they are running custom roms however i am no expert as i have only had 3 android phones (inspire, gnex, and now the HOX) so i am not qualified i guess i just know the deal works for me but you did pay for it and you should be 100% happy with the functionality of the device hope they get it fixed if it is a problem or maybe someone on xda has a rom that changes the way its handled.

Normally I would be inclined to agree with you but I've had my fill with beta testing after the iPhone 4 debacle (which, incidentally, is what led me to Android in the first place) and the Samsung Captivate's numerous issues (which, incidentally, is what I purchased after I returned my iPhone 4). I just don't have the patience to beta test new hardware any more, even with a 30-day return window.

At this point, I'm probably going to hold off on purchasing a One X until sometime in June/July. That will, hopefully, give HTC some time to fix these bugs. If they don't, then it's time to look elsewhere. I'm hesitant to go with the GS3 because I'm not a fan of the aesthetic, I can't stand TouchWiz, and I've had a less than thrilling experience with my Captivate. That leaves either the GNex, its successor, or maybe Sony's Xperia GX/Hayabusa (assuming they see a US launch). It's a long time to wait to get a new phone, but I'd rather wait than be stuck dealing with annoying bugs for months on end.

Doesn't this kind of stuff happen with every new phone? Not one new phone will debut in perfect form.
