Root required for India?
I'm traveling to India in several months, would love to use my own cell. I'm new to android, had an iPhone for years. I've Googled a ton but can't figure out if I actually need to root the phone to pop in a sim from another provider. If so, once rooted, what settings would need to be changed?

Re: Root required for India?
If this is a CARRIER phone (from AT&T) then they will unlock it for you if your contract is paid up or you can prove you are going to India (tickets or something, (or if you are a US Serviceman/woman being stationed anywhere other than US soil). Check with your AT&T store (not a mall kiosk) for details.
Of course if you had purchased the international HOX you would have no problem at all. Simply pop out your old sim, (tuck it away in a safe place) and find a provider in India. Someone on this forum would be able to make recommendations and there are people from India that post here. - 09-20-2012, 12:31 AM #4

Re: Root required for India?
I have had to do this with AT&T before - just call their customer service and ask that you want your phone GSM unlocked as you are travelling to India. If they say, they have international coverage there, just mention that you are visiting remote parts of India where only local carriers provide service and you need to use the local carrier SIM to have any connectivity. This line has worked with them well for me in the past for 3-4 phones and they would usually GSM unlock your device. If the first tier CSR does not budge on unlocking, get politely mad and ask for the manager. If you persist enough; they would GSM unlock your phone for international usage provided you are a customer in good standing (i.e. all bills paid etc.).

Agree with oshogg, but you don't have to say anything about remote places.
Just tell them their international roaming rates are too high, and you will be making and receiving calls to other phones in india, and those people are not going to want to call a US phone number to reach you because its too expensive.
If your phone is still under contract, you will have to continue to pay your US bills while gone. And be sure you have your Google Voice set up so you can at least get your voice mails via a data connection. - 09-22-2012, 12:56 AM
