Open access wifi doesn't work

Hi, my HTC one x connects fine to WiFi which has a password (eg at home or at other people's houses). However open access wifi such as on buses or cafes etc, doesn't work - it connects fine and has the "wifi" symbol indicating it's got signal, but trying to use any internet services just doesn't work. This also happened on my old HTC desire. Does anyone know how to fix this, I am sure it must be something simple but I can't find it Thanks
