HTC One = Total Fail?

Actually this is incorrect. The low 4mp is fine for viewing on the phone itself but when it's blown up to a full PC screen or TV the One's pics simply cannot compete with the higher MP cameras. Almost every single review points this out.
Actually, that's mostly due to blurriness usually due to something the subject or the user itself did. Or just sloppy technique.

Read a bit: The Megapixel Myth

Megapixels are important but more isn't always gonna make a better camera. The One is proof of this, the fact that it takes pictures with a 4MP camera that aren't that much worse than the S4's 13MP camera shows this.

Well, there you have it. The HTC One isn't "that much worse" than the S4.

How much worse is it than the Z10?

You miss the point entirely whilst making mine. HTC for reasons unknown to us, decided instead of building on the excellent camera of the One X and bumping the MPs to 13 to come up with a marketing gimmick called Ultra Pixel and scale down to 4MP. If the reviews showed the One's camera to be equal to or better than the S3, S4 or iPhone then it would be a brilliant move. Instead it just looks stoopid to have a flagship phone with a subpar camera, at least as compared to other flagships.

How frequently are you blowing your photos up to that size?

All the time. Like many folks, I stream my photos to my PC and/or my TV. Kinda hard to have family and friends all gather round my cell phone. SMH

Hold on. Hold on. Wait!

This link says the HTC One has a 4mp camera. Is that correct?

Way to go HTC! Rockin it like it's 2011.

Forget the battery. This phone can't even get out of the gate.

4mp! I swear I thought that had to be a misprint.

Lololol!

Well that's all well and good, and I'm sure HTC has its explanations as it flails about in damage control mode, but a 4mp isn't going to shoot the same resolution as 13mp. HTC is in BlackBerry Curve territory.

HTC says it helps with low light shots. My Note 2 has a low light setting that works extremely well. I've got to believe that the SIV will have the same technology with its utterly badass 13mp camera.

4mp. Sorry guys, but that indeed is an Epic Fail. No excuse for that in 2013. That's right up there with the Note 10.1's 149 ppi resolution. You just can't believe it went to market like that.

Well the camera performs well for me, low light quality means more to me than a slightly sharper zoomed in picture of something far away.
Apparently with the ultra pixels each pixel captures 300% more light, megapixels aren't everything. The camera also has great stabilisation, macro shots, The Zoe feature also means it's easy to remove items or people, pick a best picture, do action shots etc without applying settings before the picture is taken.

Problem is people will read the 4mp (ubove) and not give it a chance. All that said the lack of pixels will probably show when zooming in alot so the question is what do you do with your photos after taking them?

Read the reviews posted above. The One isnt even the best at low light, its alleged strength.

Then clearly the camera is not optimal for your applications. It will work more than adequately for many users. It doesn't make sense why people post stuff complaining so badly about a phone they're clearly not going to buy...

It has nothing to do with my needs or yours. It has to do with whether it's good enough to compete and bring HTC back from the brink.

I think at this point the majority of reviews have deemed it "good enough to comptete". At this stage it is going to come down to marketing (in my opinion).

I think the point is that the camera is more than capable, If its not THE best then so be it. The fact it's attached to an epic beast of a phone is the point. ;-)

Doesn't take a camera expert to know when a picture looks like crap.

Please don't change the subject. I wasn't talking about the One's photo quality; only the fact that its photo quality (if indeed inferior, something I cannot confirm either way) is not due to its number of megapixels.

As Demonic said, that's most likely a user error. After all, most TVs are 1080x1920, which is only 2 megapixels. So a 4MP picture taken properly would still look fine unless you zoom in.

Please try to follow this. I can confirm that the pictures taken with the HTC One and posted online look like crap.

The Note resolution and ultra pixels is difficult to understand for some. I know it's tough for you to comprehend. We'll try to overlook it.

Can you confirm whether the pictures were taken at the same place? In the same conditions? With the same settings? Did you take the pictures to know firsthand?

Oh boo. Don't get sore at me. It's just a phone. For the record, I think the HTC is just swell once you get past all its deficiencies. All better?

I think you're the best.

Ha ha. You say it's just a phone, but you're the one beside yourself because of the 4 megapixels. I know it's just a phone. Which is why I don't let 4 megapixels ruin my day. People need to not take specs so personally. You have other options if the camera makes your eyes tear up. Relax.

Wow, what a strong debate. I was dead set on getting the HTC One but, some of you are making me think about it. Who am I kidding, I'll probably end up getting both. Anyway...last year when the HTC One X came out I got it after having the original Galaxy Note. It was the one phone that made me want it despite the smaller srceen compared to my GNote. I liked it better than the S3 intially.

I then later got the S3, just to try out. The thing with the S3 is, it kind of grew on me. I hated the UI compared to the HTC One X and I also like the way the latter looked better. However the S3's versatility won me over. Being able to remove and carry a spare battery, add more storage and, some of the nice accessories made it a nice experience. I also could root it easily and install nice AOKP or AOSP Roms, eliminating the UI and boatware.

These are just my personel preferences but I hope the regular user will see the value of the HTC One. One of the things that makes me like the HTC One is the added storage. For me, I don't care if it's removable or not, as long as it's enough. That was a big fail of the One X in my opinion (only having 16GB of non-expandable storage). I really hope the carriers (in my case Tmobile) sell the HTC One with 64GB of storage but, I'm not holding my breath. 32GB is still plenty.

I see things I like in both phones. I really like the health stuff the S4 will have. I have a Nike fuelband and some other tracking apps. I don't like the fact I may have to use Samsung-equipped accessories to make that health tracking stuff work however. The HTC One will have beats-audio which I didn't care for that much compared to apps like Poweramp, were you have more control. The S3 and I'm assuming the S4 will work really nice with Poweramp and Google music, I would say better than HTC beats. The look and feel the the HTC One wins, hand-down IMO. I also like the UI better than touchwiz.

As far as camera I'm not sure. I won't know until I try them both for myself. I'm not a big camera person or picture taker. It seems like most phone cameras can take decent enough pictures for me. Some of them just require less effort.

Well that's my thoughts. I typed much more than I wanted to. I'm still leaning toward the HTC One but I know I will also get the S4 and do my own comparison.
