EDIT: I'm all fixed up now. I guess Team Win Recovery Project has problems finding files sometimes. I used ClockworkMod instead and everything went smoothly. If anyone else is having the same problem, just run a different recovery .img (CWM is the only one I'm familiar with, I'm sure there are more). I just figured I'd post my solution as an archive in case anyone else gets the same issue. Thanks for the help!

I have followed each step from various websites/tutorials. I have:

-Unlocked the bootloader correctly

-Placed the "Android Super User" file into my the phone's internal storage (via downloading it directly to the phone, as well as transferring it from my desktop)

-Installed Team Win Recovery Project, and booted using it

Now, when I enter TWRP, I can't find the AndroidSuperUser.zip file. I've tried to locate it in every single folder that is shown to me in the directory, to no avail.

The directory looks foreign compared to the other ones that I've seen. I only have folders such as "/cache", "/system", and "/media". No "/downloads" though. When I access /sdcard or /data/media, I don't find a "0" directory.

Also, when I attempt to make a backup it immediately fails, telling me that I do not have enough space in my storage. I'm reading it now and it says that I only have 289MB available, which is absolutely incorrect. I have a few minor apps installed, and other than that, the device is clean. There are 25GB+ free. Perhaps it's failing to detect my internal storage for some reason?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: My carrier is Sprint. Not sure if that makes a difference.

I tried to transfer it by USB and I couldn't locate it. This may be a stupid question, but where would I drop it to put it in the root of the file system? Sorry. I'm very new to this.

The root directory is basically the lowest level directory.

That initial directory listing should be root both in windows and when you boot from recovery.

Thank you. I'm going to try this when I get home and will post results.

Edit: Can't find the Root directory in windows. It showed up when I booted from recovery, but when I open up my internal storage from windows, I don't see it.

Edit 2: So I heard that TWRP has problems locating files sometimes. I used ClockworkMod instead and everything went smoothly. I'm rooted now! Thanks for the help.
