Does anyone know where the ESN is?

I am not talking about the sticker but in what circuitry.

I have a damaged HTC Rhyme that I can't get repaired but it has a good motherboard. If I buy a phone with a bad ESN and swap out the motherboard into that "new" phone will it work as if it were the original?

Any help greatly appreciated.
