How to root and what am I gaining?

Ok I have had the Inc 2 since july, I was always a blackberry user and switched due to the killer speed and all the apps from the droid platform. So my question is, how do I root my phone and what am I gaining from doing it. First off please dont tell me to read a thread on how to root, If I deide to do it i want someone with knowledge and experience to talk me thru the process incase I have an issue. Next is what am I gaining by doing this vs. keeping it stock. Then if I do it and something goes wrong I dnt want to destroy my phone and never be able to use it again. If I do it and dnt like it can it be unrooted. Sorry for all the newb questions, and hope someone here can give me the answers I want. Thank u so mch for taking the time to read this and hopefully one of u can help me out.

I find that by rooting my phone I'm able to get rid of HTC Sense which I'm not a big fan of, I run ROMs which are essentially Vanilla Android.
By doing so I am able to get much better battery life. There are other added perks from rooting your phone which include running some root-dependent applications, overclocking, tethering, etc. Just Google around or search on here for more info on Rooting in general.

You can unroot the phone too, I'm currently working on a guide for it, and I have done it before, I'm just trying to make the guide as user-friendly as possible before posting it.

I rooted because of all the different modifications that can be made like different quick settings, getting rid of recent apps in notification bar, remove bloat, block ads, running aosp and modified OSs (custom roms). Miui will for instance change the entire interface of your phone and is heavily customizable.

Another update has been pushed, bringing android 2.3.4 and killing root ability for now I'm told.

Agree, got stuck in a power loop after updating. Clearing the cache solved the problem though.

I wanted to root, so i could customize the phone to my liking. Plus i hate htc sense and verizon bloatware.

I accidentally updated to 2.4 so how do I go back to 2.3?

Can't go back I don't think. You'll just have to wait for revolutionary to make root for 2.3.4 or buy an xtc clip online, not sure how the clips work.
