i know there are anti virus apps on the android market (please recommend a free one if you have a favorite)

but if you download an APK file off the internet with your PC.....can you scan it with like kaspersky to see if it clean before it goes on the phone?

I would not think a PC AV product would work - the virus signatures for Android vs. a PC would be very different. Unless you are sideloading a lot of apk's from dodgy sites I don't think that AV is necessary at this point for Android.

However, with that said, Lookout seems to also offer pretty good remote wipe/recovery options in addition to AV protection.
