Default Dinc root and kernal question

I am getting my dinc in the mail tomorrow, I am coming from a lg optimus v so it's gonna be a huge change LOL. I am mainly looking to improve battery life here. If I root and just install setcpu and underclock the cpu will I gain alot of battery life or do I need to install a different kernal and get better?

If I need to do a different kernal which one do you recommend and why? I don't want to change the stock rom as I really like HTC sense. Thanks in advance guys

To use Set CPU you do need a kernel that will support over clocking. If you're using the Stock ROM then I would Suggest the Alternate Virtuous Kernel.

You can check it out in the ROMs and Mod's thread.

    Have Fun!

Is there a app I can use to just underclock the CPU without rooting?

Nope - the stock ROM does not support under/overclocking and it requires root perissions to change CPU speeds. There are a ton of suggestions in the battery stickies for improving battery life for stock installs.
