Problems with Clockworkmod recovery 3.0.0.8

I thought perhaps someone out there knows something about this. Current recovery is clockworkmod 3.0.0.8, current ROM manager ver 4.3.0.1. When I reboot into recovery I get a menu and I am able to scroll down theorgh the options. However, I am unable to execute anything. Anything and everything I choose gives me a hat icon in the middle of my screen. If I press the power botton (or any botton for that matter) again it takes me back to the menu. The only way to get out of this is to remove battery and restart the phone. I flashed recovery 3.0.0.7 but then I got the black screen with the white line on each side so I reflashed 3.0.0.8. Does anyone know what is happening here?

In Clockwork you use the Optical Scroll button to select, Power to go back and either the up down vol or the optical joystick to scroll up and down.

HBOOT uses the power button to select.
