Here's what a single player can place on a portal, as far as levels of resonators. Is there a right way and a wrong way? There sure is. You should be standing so that your blue circle is just barely touching the portal. The closer your arrow is to the portal, the tighter the placement of your resonators, which means if they are extremely tight, then XMP blasters can hit more at once with one shot. You want whoever is attacking your portal to have to work for it. At the farthest spread, you can place them at a 70 metre diameter (~210 feet). So let's take a look at how you should place them. This is what you are allowed to place on a single portal:

A single player can only place a certain number of resonators of the same level on a single portal. Here is the breakdown:
Level Max # Per Portal
1 8
2 4
3 4
4 4
5 2
6 2
7 1
8 1

If you're level 1, obviously 1/1/1/1/1/1/1/1/ is your placement, once you're level 2, you should then start staggering them as 1/2/1/2/1/2/1/2. Moving on to level 3 would be 2/3/2/3/2/3/2/3. Level 4: 3/4/3/4/3/4/3/4. Now things get a little interesting, Level 5: 5/4/3/4/5/4/3/4. Level 6: 6/4/5/4/6/4/5/4. Level 7: 7/4/6/5/4/4/6/5 and level 8: 8/4/5/6/7/4/5/6

Levels 7 & 8 are subject to your discretion, after you place your lowest resonator, have a look at where that actually sits on the map. If you can "bury" your highest level resonators inside of a building or on a freeway or in the river (if the portal is a bridge say), then do it. You can always change the lowest resonator after you've place all 8.

This is done strategically. If all of your strongest resonators are grouped together, then they can focus on taking those out first, with less walking and less firepower.
