Default Hello! To ROM or not to ROM?

Hi! My name is Kati and I am a new-ish Android user on an Epic 4G Touch (love it, by the way). Lately, I've been reading up on rooting and all it's various joys and pitfalls, and I believe I am ready to start. However, having only used one Android device ever, i'm not sure if I should go for a custom ROM or just tweak Samsung's stock ROM. Let's go over my requirements and maybe you can help me. =)

What I do on a phone:
GAMING - Definitely what I am doing most
    Web browsing
    Phone stuff (calls, texts)

What I do not (currently) care about:
Customizing the UI in any sort of cosmetic sense
Getting new features (exception: wifi tethering)

What I want from my phone:
A stable experience, not unlike what I am getting now, but better. I don't want to sacrifice anything for useless bells and whistles. I really want it to work as reliably as possible and have a nice long battery life. Wifi tethering would be nice, though.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

I never owned a Epic 4G so I can't speak any specifics of your device but I have had 4 different Android phones and rooting/rom them only added to the good experience I had with each device. If you look at the individual rom threads they will list any added features and what changes have been made. Most of these changes won't include any theme's but should make your phone run smoother and faster so i would recommend looking into these different roms.
