Welcome to Android Central Mike!
As things would have it your in luck! You have a Nexus which is one of the easiest and hardest phones to brick. We have full rooting instructions and plenty of help in the Nexus S4g forums, (Sprint carrier) I'm assuming.
Sprint Nexus S 4g
[Guide] Rooting the Nexus S 4G (Windows Version)

Re: Hello, Hiya, Sup, Hows it going....
I believe I have succeeded in rooting my phone. According to Root checker, I have. But something does not feel right. I have looked through my phone and I see that I have 2 maybe 3 superuser files and I do not know which one(s) to get rid of and keep. Upon successful completion of my rooting, I had to instal the SU on my sd card and flashed it that way. But it was NOT the Superuser 3.0.7 efghi that was mentioned in the attached post to OneClickRooting.
What I am asking is, Do I need 2 super user apps?? And should I start over from scratch?? If I was to send you a screen shot of my files on my phone, could you assist me? I am sure that more info is needed and I am available to answer.
Thank you for your help.
