Help! Factory Reset Now No Google Access

After a factory restart, Android will not recognize my gmail password and will not sync even after logging in online and changing the account password. I created a new gmail account just to download a free antivirus until I can get onto my main account to download the paid apps. Does anyone have any suggestions. My applications are set to sync and I have no problem with the new gmail account. I have sent verification from my primary to my phone and that works but I cannot get them to sync on my Thunderbolt. Also how can I upgrade my OS without Rooting. I don't know how to root my phone.
