Hi, all--newbie here.....

Name is, Jon and I'm quite excited about the Android Community. I was a proud owner of iPhones for quite some time BUT it was time to take the cool plunge into the Android World. I must say it's simply un-stinking believable what Google let's you all have!!!!! Seriously?! What the heck was I doing with iPhones so long?

Two months ago I looked at the Galaxy S 3 and next to it was the One X. I liked them both but like other sheeple I waited for the iPhone 5 statistics for my decision. Obviously you can tell I wasn't amazed or happy with the iPhone 5's "innovate" technology. What a joke. So I IMMEDIATELY went out and got the HOX this past Friday and man am I blown away. I had to jail break my iPhones to get what Google's OS allows "stock" and it's just simply unreal what these phones can do and not even lag! I often gave tons of credit to the Dev's who coded apps for Cydia BUT wait..... These Cydia Dev's (not all of them) were simply taking what Google app Dev's were already doing for a while now and simply porting them over.

I hope I didn't come off as a jerk for my first post but I'm just excited to be here with the Android Community!

Thanks for extending your skills if I choose to jail break (or it seems it's called Rooting in the Android World???). I think first I would like to get used to the stock OS to familiarize myself with it. There was a lot to set and configure out of the box. I think what I'm grappling with now is how to keep RAM higher but after researching it it seems like the OS does much of the task killing on its own??? Not so sure about the task killing apps. Apple had similar things and they were useless. (Wouldn't mind some schooling on the task killing topic).

It's funny you say that. If you check Modmyi you will see them say the same stuff about Android. I must tell you though--neither side will win an argument or a debate. It's literally pointless. I was always on the sidelines watching them rip Android but then always wondering how they back up their "facts." Thing is--I truly think it's a "cool" factor with them, like it's awesome to say I own an iPhone. I mentioned once I had a Kindle Fire (still do) and I got annihilated by them. Many people on that site too will stick up for Android but sigh....they get destroyed as well.

I'm here to learn how to get the most out of my phone, learn about Android and make some new "buddies."

I am in an argument right now on the PSU forums with a guy who says that android ripped off Google with some airplay stuff and reverse engineered an iOS app for android, and when I said that android two years ago could do what Apple is doing just now, he wants examples and for me to "prove it", how do you argue with that kind of ignorance? I'm really getting ripped too because all the Apple fanboys have joined him in ripping on me and saying I'm lying.

It's actually a bad thing to run any type of task killer because it impedes with Androids built in task manager. I only run one just for in case a rogue app goes crazy and it NEEDS to be force closed.

Ok I'm on my computer now, I can sit down and explain why Task killers and managing the memory is bad on android!

It is bad to use task killers due to Android having its own built in task manager / killer. Android operates on the principal that memory modules that are full of info use roughly the same amount of power as a memory module that is completely empty. Using this idea, Android automatically fills up the memory to I believe its 60-80% capacity depending on the device manufacturer, software requirements, amount of memory, etc. with apps that it finds you using the most. Such as the home screen launcher automatically is stored, widgets, wallpapers, and then after that Android learns what your habits are for applications. Once you open up an application that needs more RAM than what is currently available, Android automatically starts killing off tasks by oldest first. If you were to run an automatic task killer you would be using this entire idea against you. You would be emptying the RAM and Android would automatically start reloading those apps causing CPU usage to spike and consequently the battery will actually die faster. HOWEVER, a BASIC task killer is nice to have just in case an app goes crazy and starts eating up all the CPU usage for no reason.

Thats about as simple and precise as I can put it!

I wouldn't recommend rooting until you understand the basic concepts behind Android as it is always helpful to know what you are actually doing when you root the device! Most devices now have one click root methods but if that fails it is nice to know how to get yourself out of a bricked device! Welcome aboard man.

Here at AndroidCentral, the grass is green and the girls are pretty! The phones are fast, the members are funny. Once you get used to the basics of android, Stock or otherwise- (Note: Your One X is running HTCs Android "skin" called Sense 4.0- It's one of the better skins in my opinion) I do recommend Rooting and running a custom ROM. They open up universal amounts of new features- Screenshots, Processor Speed settings, Visual cusomization, tablet modes, functionality, anything you can possibly think of!

With the phone under warranty I suppose I should stay stock a while. Although when I jail broke my iPhones I was still under warranty. I'm no noob to jail breaking but I certainly am in the Android world!!

Yeah, I held back on my phone for 3 months simply because I didn't know about rooting. Though on my tablet I went ahead on the first day since I couldn't take it. I thought I would love the tablet, but that version of Touchwiz looked so childish, so horribly ugly, I went ahead and found out I could only remove it through a custom ROM which was fine with me.
I flashed AOKP ICS on it and never looked back. By the time we got a crappy KIES ONLY!!!! update in late August or something, I already had a stable and sexy Jellybean.

E: If you're a noob here, plenty of people will be more than glad to help you out (Including myself, though I don't own a One X and can't really do much here. My cousin and aunt both have one so I can tell you it's pretty amazing even on stock) in ROOTING and with any questions you may have.

You know one tempting thing about rooting right now is getting rid of the bloatware AT&T put on this machine. It's horrid. Too many apps that could be downloaded if I wished to have them. I'm talking about 15 apps I can do without and that's a guess.

Not defending the rotten Apple here but they insisted their devices be free from bloat. However, that is the sole and intensive purpose on WHY they don't have fun and customizable phones. They just don't allow it. It's night and day here from Apple. All I can say is WOW..................................

You've all been great too me so far. Had I even talked about liking Android at say Everythingicafe, they would've gone for my jugular. It's why I quit going there years ago (when I still had an iPhone)...

Yeah, I'll admit. Every carrier does that. The worst case was the Verizon GNex which was supposed to be Bloat-free. Virgin, Sprint, ATT, TMo, Verizon, every carrier does that on Android phones.

Have you tried disabling the apps you don't want? No root required, just go into settings then apps and find the apps you want to disable. Say you wanted to disable my Verizon (I can't remember what the ATT version is called) you would just tap on the name of the app in setting and uninstall updates once this finishes where it said uninstall updates should now say disable. Tap that and it's disabled, just don't go too crazy disabling apps because if you disable something that's important to the system the only way to undo it is to master reset the device.
