I suspect Root will be achieve, but bootloaders are getting more and more complicated to get around. Now if the Nexus 5 is the G2 in disguise you will get some advantages there. All remains to be seen.

Agreed. The evolution of the bootloaders these days has become an increasingly big issue. If we can't do what we want on OUR devices its a problem. Network integrity is a BS statement since it's not proven and they won't show proof of it. Root is the minimum I require when getting ANY smartphone or tablet today. If I can't make use of EXPosed framework its not worth it.
