Pentile like display

In direct sunlight I can see a grid on the display. Thought this was a pentile thing.

That is not pentile, which has to do with the pixel layout and not what you're seeing. What you're seeing is the digitizer grid under the display. I don't know the technical specifics, but I think it has to do with how close the digitizer is to the screen and inherent with LCD displays like the one on this phone. The Nexus 4 had the same thing, as has other phones with LCD displays like some from HTC. I remember my old HTC View having the same effect under the screen.

Oh I see. Ok that makes sense. I had a HTC one but very briefly so I probably didn't notice. And before that I had 2 Samsung's with amoled.

You can see this on AMOLED screens as well. I could see it on my Galaxy Nexus. It's pretty much visible on all phones in the right light.

What you saw are for Knock ON feature. It isn't pentile as you thought. This is IPS display.
