LG G2 - Steady high pitch on call from ear speaker

Just curious if anyone else has heard the constant wining sound on the earpiece. I'm not talking about the r2d2 sound that is heard intermittently this is a sound when you take a call or place one it is high pitched. It does not change the clarity of the call, it is just a sound that sounds like the speaker can't handle the power being sent to it. The volume of the earpiece does not matter. I have also disabled voice privacy and it does not help.

I'm guessing you're on Verizon? If so, this has been reported by some owners. It doesn't effect all Verizon owners, so it makes me think it's a regional issue.

Thanks Jay, yeah I'm with Verizon hopefully they get it resolved.

You may want to contact VZW technical support, at minimum to get another log in their system on the issue. The more calls they get about it the more likely they're going to push to get it figured out. Something tells me it has something to do with the LG modem and certain CDMA equipment on the VZW network, but that's just an uneducated guess. It will be interesting if the other CDMA network (Sprint) suffers from the same issue when it's released.

I have noticed this as well. I originally thought it was just while making a call but I also noticed that it makes the same noise when I put the phone up to my ear when the phone is on but not even on a call. It is like there is some power interference or something. Check yours and see if you hear the noise even when not on a call. I am thinking about taking the phone back and getting it replaced since I am within the return window.

I have also noticed a squeaking noise on the back of the phone depending on where I hold/press the phone. This is very annoying but I figure once I get a case it won't happen. Does yours do this?

Im in a deployed location that has certain areas with wifi. The ringing still comes in even with airplane mode on. So it wont be verizon. It has to be something with the phone since the model is exclusive to verizon

I'm experiencing the same thing with my G2: high pitched noises coming from around the earpiece end of the phone (though I don't think it's actually the earpiece making the noise). It comes and goes depending on what I'm doing on the phone, but it seems to always be there when I'm making a call. Very annoying :( Did you end up returning yours? If so, did you notice a difference with the replacement?

EDIT: Couple of notes for others researching this issue: This is on the Verizon model of the G2. I've rooted it but am still running stock firmware. There's an OTA update that I was notified of today, but haven't taken it (still on VS98010B).

Hey guys I just registered to tell of my experience with this issue thus far.
I got my first LG G2 about a month ago, and received my first call shortly after and I heard the high pitched noise (it really is ear-piercing and call me crazy but I really wonder if it would damage my hearing with heavy use) so I waited a few days and it never got better or worse. I took it into the Verizon store and luckily the guy that was helping me could hear it as well and he got me a manufacturer defect warranty in the works. I received my factory refurb phone a couple days later and after setting it up I immediately placed a call to see if it was making the noise. Guess what? It's making the same noise. At this point I don't know if I should immediately go get another replacement or maybe wait to see if LG fixes the way the phones are constructed because clearly something is wrong with the phone.

I notice mine is doing it even with the phone off, meaning the screen not lit up. Something is pulling power constantly but is not affecting battery life.

The sound I'm experiencing seems to have a little bit of variance to it, depending on what the phone is doing at the time. It seems to really only happen when the screen isn't being updated constantly, so I'm thinking it might possibly have something to do with the GRAM hardware maybe? That's a huge guess, but it does seem to correlate fairly well with my experience so far... For example, if I set my home screen background to a live wallpaper, the phone does not make the noise while on the home screen. If I set it to a static wallpaper, it does make the noise on the home screen. RedditIsFun: static image, makes the noise. Games that are constantly updating the screen, no noise. The dialer while in a call is just a static image, the noise shows up again.

One workaround I've discovered for this after observing the above is to go to my animated home screen while in a call to get rid of the noise. It works, but it does also keep the screen on and vulnerable to accidental face-pressing :P

rackumrack: I haven't noticed mine while the phone is sleeping. I'll see if I can get it to repro then as well.

I just noticed this the other day - I have the VZW G2, VS980, I've rooted it, put on a custom rom, I've had the VS98010B and now the OTA modem I put on, and it's still happening.

The thing I noticed is it isn't so much coming from the earpiece as it is somewhere behind the LCD. Like a transistor or something. It's quite annoying and seems amplified when I am on a call, it's so bad that I have to pull my ear a couple inches away from the phone to get through a call it's so high pitch and loud.

I wish this was an easy fix, but in reality I think the only way this could be fixed is hardware. This doesn't seem to be a software issue.

It's definitely a hardware issue. I can say this with 100% certainty and with a little less certainty I can say it's the electricity running through a capacitor inside the phone. At any rate this is a manufacturer defect and I hope LG releases a statement letting us know they've found the problem and have fixed it so I can take my replacement back and get another replacement knowing it'll be fixed.

Do you think enough people are getting the same experience to make LG realize there is a problem? It makes me wonder since there are not many forums talking about it in detail. I have to use speaker phone almost exclusively!

I thought I would report my recent dealings with this. I had enough of the sound that continously was piercing my ear and cutting my brain. I was sent a "certified like new" replacement and the sound is gone for now, this after 24 hours with the new device. It appears it is a hardware issue. I will report if anything changes.

Confirmed. After 10 days with the replacement device the sound has not returned, definitely a hardware issue.

I just ordered a replacement from Amazon. I'll report back with my findings! Thanks for the replies on your experience, Rackumrack :) EDIT: I got the replacement from Amazon and while I think I can still hear a little bit of the noise it's not nearly as loud as the first phone. Seems like a hardware problem indeed.

Klotar, please do let us know if you find that XDA thread! I took a quick look around, but could only find this one that doesn't provide a fix: Steady high pitch on call from ear speaker? - xda-developers
