Hi guys. I was thinking of buying a G2 for myself. Do you think it is a good idea considering that it is 2016?! Is it a fast phone? To give you an idea of "fast", I checked my friends Nexus 5 and if the G2 is as quick as that, I am more than satisfied. Also, looks like Android 5.1 is not coming to G2 anymore, so in case I buy it, do you recommend upgrading to 5.0.2 or I just stick to 4.4.4?
Thanks everybody!

The G2 has very similar hardware to the Nexus 5, so it should probably be ok. But you might want to consider getting a Nexus 5--there are still some nice deals. Here's a refurb 32 GB for $160: LG Google Nexus 5 D820 Unlocked GSM (32GB) – Daily Steals

EDIT: Copy and paste this into your browser: dailysteals.com/products/lg-google-nexus-5-d820-32gb-unlocked-gsm-4g-lte-android-phone-black

Chiming in here - I want to buy a backup phone to use on days I know it might take a little more of a beating. Will the LG G2 still work in 2016? Is battery life decent? Are most apps still supported by the older software?

It will still work in 2016 and run most apps. It's run whatever I've thrown at it in may modest needs. (D800)

Battery life is good but if the battery is old you may want to get a replacement. $7.75 USD will net you a good replacement. Hardware durability can be an issue, especially the digitizer. Those can be had relatively cheap. $37.00 in my case for the LCD/digitizer combo. No provision for an SD card but there is always cloud storage. Be sure to get the 32Gb variant if you do.

Thanks! How is battery life with a brand new battery?

I can't state the life as I haven't installed the new one yet. I'm waiting for the LCD/digitizer combo to arrive.

The battery that's in the phone currently is down to an estimated 2100 mAh. As it currently is, I have a web browsing SOC of about 3~ 3.5 hours . It's okay but not spectacular on LolliPop. My wife's Huawei ascend XT with it's 3000 mAh battery is a lot better but it's only a 720P.

There are always trade offs.
