G4 overheated during navigation and caused the screen to go super dim

Using Google maps for navigation with satellite view on my Verizon g4 while charging caused my phone to get the overheat warning and the screen turned super dim. I couldn't see the screen enough to use it for navigation. Battery temperatures reached 125°F.

Hmm.. I'll have to keep an eye on this. Haven't used maps in the car yet. But every single time I do, I also use Play Music and have it charging....so...

It's good that it cools itself in that way.

Interesting. With the note about "Charging might pause", I wonder if it's possibly related to what I observed here:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/lg-g4/538505-strange-charging-behavior-intermittent-charging-until-rebooting.html

I never saw that warning message during the day while trying to charge it before rebooting the phone, however.

I want to find an app that can record/graph battery charge level, and at least temperature, over time, to try and relate charge behavior to temperature. From your screenshot, I just found Battery Monitor Widget and installed that, it looks like maybe that's what you're using. This might do what I'm looking for.

On my S3, the built-in battery graph tool would show when things were on/off, like WiFi, GPS, when it was charging, etc. I found that very helpful, for looking at the graph and understanding what was going on at the time. Not sure how to get that on my G4.

Edit- I have used mine in the car with Waze for navigation, while also running Stitcher (podcast app), and charging, without apparent temperature issues so far. I am using a Spigen Slim case, and it's been around 70F here recently.

Same overheating issue while charging and being in a Skype video call.
The phone was so hot that I had to put it down!
I am planning on returning the phone.

I remember having that issue with my S3. I haven't used the G4 in the heat for any real length of time yet though. Summer is when it used to happen quite a bit with the S3. I'm sure quite a bit of it is due to the phone sitting in the windshield with the sun beating down on it. Even with the AC on it still gets really hot where the phone is.

Sounds like user error.

Wouldn't say that... I've had previous phones heat up quite a bit doing a video Google Hangout as well.

User Error?
Is it a User error expect to be able to use a phone while is charging?
Perhaps I set my expectations too high for this device! :)
Oh, I forgot to mention that happened in the house with an environment temperature of 77F.

Running GPS while in the sun is going to make your phone hot. It's not just the G4. Turn off auto brightness so it doesn't jack it up to 80% in daylight and try to avoid putting it in a place in the car where the sun is not beating down on it, like in front of a vent.

Lithium ion batteries have an optimal discharge range from -4°to 140°F so don't think anything is going to blow up at those temps. The phone is just being proactive and doing what you should be doing automatically in case temperatures keep rising.

Well I can run my note 4 in this condition and even enable mobile hotspot and it still runs much much cooler, and no issues with overheat (the message did appear once on the note 4 for a short time, but went off by itself). I am not even using mobile hotspot on my g4 and it overheats.

Personally I don't care about the overheat warning (my note 3 got it all the time when I was going for 5 terabytes in a month), but I do care that the screen auto dims to the point that I can't really see the screen, right in the middle of using navigation, which can be dangerous.

Yeah I hear ya. Remember when phones used to shut off completely without warning? Lol

Sounds like the auto throttling of the screen brightness to reduce the temp. The G3 I had did that and would heat up when watching videos and the screen would dim. Not sure if they ever did anything about it since I returned the phone and moved on.

Living in CA, that has happened to me on my past few phones (LG G3, LG G2, and Samsung GS4). I don't have to be using navigation, but I often have my phone charging while in the car and it will give me an error message saying that charging has stopped as the phone is too hot. It happens less now that it is illegal in CA to attach your phone to the windshield. Now it sits in a cup-holder stand and gets air directed at it from the AC and it keeps it a bit cooler so I haven't seen that message in a while. Though I will expect to see it as the summer temps of 100+ start kicking in. :)

I used to get overheating problems when charging in the car using navigation with previous phones and narrowed it down to the USB cable I was using in the car. If you are using cheap cables then it could be that.

More info needed please.

  • What was the temperature in the vehicle (I assume a car)? Where was the G4?
  • Has this happened before with navigation?
  • Was there a good/consistent cell signal?
  • What other apps were running?
  • Any other overheating issues/G4 running hot?

My HTC one x completely died while playing a game and charging it in the car. I was told by the at&t device repair center to not charge while working the phone.

Ever since I stopped doing anything while charging.

Expect today when I wanted to finish a level in a game I plugged in the car charger to my G3 lol

Inside the car Temps were probably in the low 80s. It was 100 outside but I had the ac on full blast

G4 was on the dashboard.

Yes it has happened other times, temperature wise,to over 120. It hasn't dimmed the screen again but I haven't taken along enough drive either and Temps have cooled since then too.

Cell signal was decent to good overall.

Nothing else running in the foreground. Typical background syncs for email, hangouts, etc. Sometimes I will stream gpm.

Other than that, the g4 hasn't overheated, but I don't really play any intensive games... Mostly hangouts, Tapatalk, chrome, Gmail.

If the sun was beating down on the phone that would heat up the phone and the battery. Placing a white piece of paper on the phone would make a difference? But then audio directions only, Even with the AC on full blast, the phone will still absorb the energy from the sun if in direct sunlight on the dashboard.
